i got a 304 in my cj5 1975 and its a earlier 304. I bought it from a guy 2 month ago and the engine wasn't running for one year. I put it in my jeep, i put 20w50 with new filter. Started pretty very easy. But when just finish i was doing some road test and there is a little ticking noise on passager side. After some research and one of my friend who is familiar with engine told me that it was some kind of worn hydrolic lifter.

Here's the symptone: When i start the engine sometime it take few second before i can hear the ticking noise. And normaly i start the engine and the noise start as soon as the engine is started. When i hit the street and i give some gaz the engine the ticking noise dessapear and come back as soon as is stop giving engine some gaz. All the time the engine is running on compression(use engine as a brake) it does it too.

The ticking noise get a little louder when the engine is at normal temp.
The engine is ruuning preety smoutly and i want to eliminate this little noize.
I would like to know if a hydrolic lifter is my problem???
And also if it the case do i need to change all the lifter and the cam?
I have another 304 and i would like to use one of its lifter for temporaly fix?
How can i identify the bad lifter?

    Thank

what kind of oil pressure are you getting?

20-50 is pretty thick, especially if its still cold up there in Canada.

It's been quite a while since I did a 304, but if I remember correctly there is almn. rocker caps that hold the rocker in place that wear.
Mine were all worn pretty good.
    Here's what I'd do..................................
    Warm you engine up
Find out what side for sure.
Pull the valve cover and with the engine off, lookie @.
Lay cover back on and fire that mother up, keeping the rpm down . Careful! Watch! the oils squarts from the rockers, (or it could be a ooze, but oil SHOULD be coming out the push rods onto the rockers, push rod should be spinning, should be easy to spot the noisey one.
Now to try to fix it................
I'd pull the rocker cap and look for bright shiney areas or wear. Lookie at the push rod tip for wear, roll the rod on a piece of glass to make sure it's not bent. clean it all up, make sure the tube is open. Check rocker, valve tip, etc.
Reinstall, torque it down if all is good.
With the engine off, spary some carb cleaner through the rocker oiler hole, down@ the push rod and turn the motor over a few revolutions.
(Lifters are little drums with machined tops that fill with oil and when the cam pushes on them, sends the oil up the push rod to the rocker/valve. SOMETIMES they get carbon or maybe rust if they sat collasped as in your case and that keeps the top of the lifter from "pumping up" all the way).
spray and rotate a few times.
Lay you cover back on, fire it up again, sometimes you get lucky and it pumps up and is happy.
I've sprayed the lifter while idling to try to clean it out.
(might be a good idea to dump your oil after this as there is carb cleaner in it now).
This has worked maybe 2-3 times in all the times I've done it.
I had a Dauntless V-6 in a '61 CJ5 that sat for a LONG time and the lifters on 1 side just would not pump up.
I sparyed them and nothing. poured some 5-30 down the push rod and they filled and that was that, just needed to be primed?? The first few weeks they were noisey when I fired it up for a longer period of then I liked and would fill, was just about to do the lifter J.O.B., but it went away after a while and never heard from them again, so you can try that too.
After I've replaced "soft lifters", I took the lifter apart and saw score marks in the barrel, keeping oil form retaining in there.
If I was gotta do the lifter J.O.B., I'd do all 16, (I know! anal, but I only want to do the work on MY motors once), check my cam lobes for wear. Heck you might as well check the timing chain whilist your there.........
Your lucky, with a V-8, you only have to pull the intake.R)
Good luck and let us know!
