With gas prices on the rise it's getting hard to drive the Jeep around. Is this a Partial propane conversion that would allow me to run propane and then quickly switch to Gasoline.

Also what MPG do propane conversions typically get. at the rate gasoline is going It might be cheaper to drive on it verses gasoline.

    Thoughts?

    Thanks,

    Blake Harrison

Propane has less energy per unit volume than gasoline, so typically gets lower MPG. The selectable conversions where you can choose either gas or propane typically don't work very well. Plus you need to find space for both a gas tank and a propane tank. In a CJ5 there is not much space available. If you're going to convert it makes more sense to convert completely to propane and forget switching back and forth to gas.

I have the room for two decent size tanks where the back seat normally sits (No one in my family for my friends like to ride in my Jeep). So I have plenty of room there now.

I would like to try something that can do both and see how unreliable it is.

Thanks for your advice. If I even convert I'll post something back up.

If you were worried about cost, I would think that CNG/LNG would be a better choice than LPG or pure propane or butane. There's actually a glut of natural gas currently, and NA has vast reserves. IIRC the LPG gases are a byproduct of liquid petroleum distillation, and dependent on crude prices.

Don't know of any issues wrt LNG vs. LPG or gasoline/gasahol/ethanol.

There might be and idea. I guess I didn't think about it. I'll have to see if there are any kits for running LNG. I don't know a whole lot about these systems. I am trying to determine if I even want to take a different route of suck it up and drive it when I can.

    Wikipedia article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Natural_gas_vehicle

Apparently CNG is more common than LNG for vehicle use. T. Boone Pickens is running a campaign currently to convert the entire USA commercial fleet to natural gas ... if that happens, the price will go up but availability should rival gasoline.
