Purpose of this bend?

Well, I did something against my better judgement. Ordered a complete
exhaust system from a company in [south carolina].. The parts looked good
but..the front down pipe misses the crossmember position 1/2 ", the long pipe misses
the front pipe1" and I have 2" clearance on the rear axle. With both forced
together, they rub on the clutch-brake pivot shaft.
The question I have don't amount to a hill of beans, but I want to know what is the purpose of the verticle bend just before making the 90 at the muffler?The picture in the fsm shows a two good reference pictures. Any how that bend sits on top of the rear axle, with 2" clearance.. Looks like ----.
All that it looks like to me is it acts like a "pee-trap"from the muffler..Unless someone can convince me other wise, that sucker is going back. By the way, thats on an early cj5 with a f134..:?

 

I got a complete exhaust system from probably the same company in South Carolina and also found it to be a POS. I ended up hauling the whole mess to the muffler shop and getting them to bend it correctly and install.

 

I'd send it back. I got mine from Walck's and it fits great.

How much clearance do you have between the axle and exhaust pipe
on the Walck's pipes ??
Sounds like they are the better of the two..
