I was going to replace my front brake lines today with a set of longer braided ones.. On first inspection I noticed that it is darn near impossible to get a wrench on the fitting on the back of the wheel cylinder.. So I ask: Do I need to pull the backing plate off to get to this fitting? Or is there a secret to removing this fitting in place? Special wrench??

This is on a 75 CJ5 with drums and stock D30

The easiest way is to remove the wheel cylinder with the hose still attached.
    Thats how I did mine.

If you are replacing the hose, it would be cheap insurance to put in new wheel cylinders also

Did mine today, twice(dont ask) they are a boogger. The front s-line made it a very slow process. 3/8 wrench with just small turns at a time. I couldnt get the line back on and did what was suggested above post said, it was a hard line and I just straightend it out and pulled it through the hole where the cylinder go's to get the line on, then rebent the line and pulled it through. thats the only ways I know how.

hanx for the replies.. One way or the other it looks like I have to take something apart and put it all back together. After reading the above i am thinkin take the brake cylinder out and remove the old line, install the new and put it all back together again.. And I hate taking drum brakes apart and putting them back together again. Thanx for the replies so far.

yeah, me too. with the s-line I had to unbolt it at the other end and straighten it some in order to get it to go through the hole enough. Just be careful not to kink the line. make small bends in diferant locations.
    good luck,

It's been quite a while since I did mine (last year) on my "74 and longer (2 years er so), since I did it on my '61.
Me thinks I cut the flex hose and slipped a socket over the part that was spun into the wheel cylinder.
You'll learn that you gotta make "special wrenches" to work on a jeep.
I keep a pile of cheap wrenches and sockets to "modify".

I lucked out last fall and got them off with vice grips. I dont remember if they were needle nose or not, but it was a bit of a pain. Good luck.

Hi, I am hope full that you guys might be able to answer something for me. I have a Dana 30 axle from what I was told it's from a 75 CJ. I swapped it into my 69 Cj replaced all the internal parts and now I can't seem to find the correct brake hose. I just received new front brake lines that I ordered for a 75-76 CJ and the male end 3/8 24 that goes into the wheel cylinder doesn't seem to be long enough?

Does anyone know if the earlier axles used a deeper wheel cylinder?

The axle I have is a 30 with 11x2 drum brakes.

Update. I ended up pulling the brake shoes and hub off. Then I unbolted the brake cylinder and removed it with the line attached...

The brake lines I used I bought at Quadretech.. They screwed right into the brake cylinder..

It's not meant to seal like that, there is a copper washer that goes between the brake hose and the wheel cylinder to seal it, similar to the ones used on disc brake lines.
