DJ3A Electrical System

Would a '63 DJ3A have had a 6V or 12V electrical system from the factory?

I thought the 3B's were 6v until the end of their production or am I mistaken?

 

Nope, latter production 3B's were 12V-same as CJ5/6. Not sure when 12V became standard, but believe it was an option for some time before then-at least back to 56-57. Oldtime probably has the definative answer on the timing.

 

I know and the DJ being a bit of a step child still running the L head it could have been either but one would suspect as miserly as Willys was, they would all be the same.

 

Not that it applies, but the 1955 Dj3a owners book says they were 6V in 1955. I would suspect when the rest of the jeeps changed over to 12 volt so would this model, but I have no proof of that. If it would help you I do have the 1955 wiring diagram from that manual. No colors are listed, it is all printed in black so it is hard to follow.

Does anyone know and have documented proof of when the 3B and other models changed over?

 

My DJ was 12v when I got it, not sure if it was converted, or came this way.

Nice pics, a440! What's up with your grille, the way it has the extra width on the upper portion, outside of the headlights? Is that stock?

 

Some kind of after market grill. I don't know anything else about it as PO put it on.
Bought it pretty much the way you see it. Ole lady saw it and had fell in love with it.
Been tryin to talk me into puttin a V8 in it ever since.....I been makin excuses why it can't happen lol

 

I see. It sure looks interesting - a lot like the Jeepster Commando grille.
Ha! Have fun with it - however little or much horsepower it winds up having.

As far as Commando...I've got....if I remember right..1969?? SC1 sittin here that's seen better days and they are not the same.
