Hello everyone I need advice on mounting a belt driven power steering pump on a 3b with SBC. It has a cradle type front motor mount. There is about 1/2" clearance between motor side of fan blade and alternator/water pump belt,no room for a double pulley on harmonic balancer. QUESTION IS it possible to run water pump, alternator,ps pump off one v-belt? If not, what about a double pulley on alternator to run ps pump or vise-versa, or maybe a electric power steering pump$$. Thanks Bill I have been staring at this project for awhile.

I doubt that a single belt would run for very long without self-destructing, that is a LOT of load for one V-belt.

Do you have room for a short spacer between the fan and the water pump?

what about running an electric fan? I also have a sbc, 283, and am running a PS pump off a double pulley on the harmonic balancer with the water pump/alternator off the other belt. I had to go to an electric fan and short water pump to make it all fit. It is tight, but it fits and works. My fan easily keeps the engine cool.

Thanks for response. w3srl,there is about 1" between front edge of fan and radiator core. If I use a double pulley on balancer I would have to space fan out another inch which would be into the core. I have given up on the idea of running everything off one belt. Although 55-57? chevys with power steering had a generator and ps in one unit, ran off one belt.Still thinking about running water pump and double pulley PS pump with one belt. Then run alternator off PS pump. Guess only way to know is to try it. Lot of work and expense if it doesn't. Thanks

I hear ya Bill, but keep in mind that a'57 chevy only had something like a 35 amp generator, so the load was not as great. I've seen vehicles that smoke the single v-belt whenever a significant load is put on the alternator.

With clearance as tight as it is, it sounds like an electric may be the best way to go for your application. Good luck with the project!

Actually, you should just bite the bullet and put real motor mounts in-not that big of a job. You get more than 2 accessories on a belt and the angles start to get very shallow-belt slip and accelerated wear. And absolutely do not go to a generator! I think my 3B only has about 5/8" between the fan and core. It's been that way for decades so it works in my case but it will depend on how much frame and motor mount flex you get. I ended up going for a tripple pulley arrangement and it was no small problem finding a tripple for the water pump where all three were the same diameter. I did this for the above belt angle reasons-the water pump is essentially driven off the PS belt.

Thanks for comments. Duffer, early block, no side motor mounts. No room for 2 grove pulley on balancer anyway. Now looking at flat belt drive system. Did you consider one for your 3b? Thanks

Since its easy for me to spend your money for you, I’d get rid of that mechanical fan and go electric. Besides costing you clearance for better accessory pulleys it’s costing you power and throttle response. Seriously, it’s amazing how much power is hidden behind a mechanical radiator fan.
If your alternator won’t handle the extra load get rid of that old POS and get a GM 1 wire alternator. They make them comparatively cheap for 60 Amp to expensive for 220-240 Amp. If you’re going to run any lights or a winch you’ll need more alternator anyway.
