just filled the steering box with lubricant and it started to leak out where the horn wire comes out of the unit, could I have overfilled it or is their an internal seal that i am not seeing in the manual?

There's a metal tube inside the box that the horn wire runs through. The tube is supposed to be (brazed or crimped) to the circular plug on the bottom of the box. If the tube has come loosed, it'll leak.

can I pump heavy grease into the box to slow the leak or will it bind up the gears?

This may be a good candidate for some Cornhead grease.

FWIW I bought a used Ross steering set up from another lister and when I got it home my plan was to drain the fluid and replace it. I opened the drain plug and nothing came out. I peer in there and determine it is clearly filled with grease instead of fluid. So I just put it into use. So far so good, but I do not think it has a leak by the horn wire so I cannot speak to whether or not it may find its way out there....
And if anyone thinks this is a really dangerous set up, do tell!

I myself would not put regular grease in it, it will not lube it properly, it's to thick. I would use something like knuckle pudding or as I stated above, the cornhead grease from john deere. The best way to fix it is to take it out and repair it.

I recently drilled out a plug that was in the bottom of my Ross box to run a horn wire. The horn now works, but lubricant has been pouring out for the past few weeks. I thought maybe it was just overfilled and coming down the inner tube, but now I am afraid it is just leaking. Where do I refill the box and with what lubricant? Also, any other suggestions for how to stop this leak from around the wire? Where would I find this "knuckle pudding"?
    Thanks

I just removed my ross box to rebuild and it was full of grease it also has a grease fitting on the top of the box so that leads me to believe its supposed to be filled with grease
