I have a 304 with a 3 speed trany. The motor has plenty of power but the jeep just roll or moves to fast in first gear. Can I change the gears in the trany are would it be beter to swap it out and if I swap it which would be the best practicle swap. I curently have 35's but am fixing to swap to 33's.

are you looking for off road or on road performance?

You cannot change the gears in the trans, however you can regear the t-case or axles depending on what you are looking to do. A trans swap is also an option.

I drive on gravel roads and in the woods. If I regear the t-case it will still have the same gear ratio in 2 and 4 hi correct? I believe the 1st gear ratio is around 3 to 1. I think the 4 speed that came with the straight 6 is around 6 to 1. Will that trany work with the 304 v8 and my t-case?

Yes, the transfer case gears only change the low range reduction. They have no effect on high range.

The T-18 4-speed with a 6.32:1 first gear was only used in CJs '77-79. They are scarce. The T-18 used from '71-76 has a 4.02:1 1st gear. Either of these transmissions would be an easy swap into your Jeep.

Swapping to the T-18 is a very popular topic here. Search for old posts and read the Novak site http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/t18_t19.htm - lots of good info on the Novak site.

Thanks for the info it helps a lot. I think ill start saving for a T-18 and a twin stick for my T-case. I think the 6.32 to 1 is what I'm looking for.

Your probably going tho need a shorter bell housing depending on which trans you find, the T15 had that long input shaft. Then you may also need to shorten/lengthen your drive lines.
