What's the best way to remove the rusty spots on the trim ring of the speedometer? I also have some rusty spots on the cigarette lighter I would like to remove. Thank you.

Rust is easily removed with some steel wool/fine sandpaper. If badly rusted, a dremel tool can remove the rust easily. The problem you will have is preventing the rust from coming back. Short of having the trim ring re-chromed, you might try painting the previously rusted areas with rustoleum or a rust preventative epoxy.

Of course, it will help if you can park the jeep in a garage, and try to avoid moisture/high humidity. You know what they say, "Rust never sleeps!"

Don't use sandpaper. Steel wool is ok, or maybe a little polishing compound on a buffing pad.

You can remove the "bloom" of the rust, but you will leave behind a pit down to the base metal. The pits won't show very much. You must wax or clear coat to prevent the pits from rusting again.

I suggest you remove the speedo from the dash, polish it up, clean it well, and clear coat from a spray can. It'll look good for a few years.

I had the same problem, cleaned it up with steel wool & clear-coated it. That lasted a few years but it got to the point it wasn't salvageable. I ended up replacing it with a stainless steel ring off a later speedo.

If the rust isn't too bad, I have found that rubbing it with a wad of dry aluminum foil works quite well!!!

SOS pads works well also. the chemical in the pad works like a buffing agent.

    X2 on the SOS pads.

They work better on rusted chrome than anything else Ive ever tried.

I've used chrome polish and a sponge on the "not to badly rusted" stuff on my bikes and jeep.
I used the polish and the green scratch side of the sponge for tougher stuff.
