One of the main complaints about drums is that they are not self-cleaning, like disks. You can indeed get water/mud/sand in the drums and that will affect braking.

The obvious thing if you spend a lot of time in muddy water is to upgrade to disks. But you may be able to improve things by drilling the drums. That should make the drums more self-cleaning, though I expect it won't be as effective as disks.

Also, it's a good idea to rinse out the drums after you've been running in deep water.

We havent had any rain in a while, it was a very dusty roads. We could barely see 3 jeeps ahead. The left front was actually locking up, when I back down the driveway and jerk the brakes, or tap them hard, the left front was locking up. Spray it out with water from behind and all fixed. Then I drove it on a dusty sugar sand dirt road for about 20 minutes when my dogs escaped, and it started doing it again. And once again, I hosed it out and it was fine.

I had discs on my list for next mod, and somebody made me an offer I couldnt refuse last night and my Jeep went away on a trailer. Very sad to see her go.

Tim, how do you like the J10? I am going to look at an 81 today. Anything I should look for? Maybe shoot me a PM so its not in a brake thread. LOL.

Thanks guys for all the help.
