What have people done, or how have people painted the embosses lettering on the tailgate and sides of their Jeeps?

I have used a 5" hard rubber roller
and also tried just a model brush.
    they both work.

The factory used a roller, AFAIK. That's what the body man at the Jeep dealer did too.

You could mask the area around the letters with some cardboard or whatever, to prevent any mishaps. I'd use a gloss oil-based paint... would be easy to wipe it off while wet with a little mineral spirits if it didn't turn out well.

Model paints for the V6 emblems. Someone here did that already - use a little brush to flow the paint into the voids where the colors go.

    i started to mask
but about 10 seconds into it i realized it was a waste of time.
by the time i masked one thing .
i could have painted all of them by hand.

Like most things in life, I considered doing it backwards. Painting several coats of white over the emboss before applying the finish color coat. Then a quick buff off of the color, leaving the JEEP or JeeP as it were. Haven't tried it yet.

Just flow your paint into the areas and let set for a while. Before it dries hard, you can easily remove over-paint from chrome with a popsicle stick. Cut the end of the stick square and gently remove paint from chrome. Painted these in just a few minutes.

You know how you tap out a gasket with a ball peen hammer ? Same idea for masking small stuff. Tape over the emblem with about an 1/8" overlap and then carefully follow the edge of the raised portions with a sharp razor knife. I've done it this way before with good results. It's quicker than it sounds.

Got to say NO on this Tim. Do not use a brush to fill voids, leaves marks and uneven edges. The way to do voids is w/ a syringe. Size only matters in getting the paint to flow easily, stay away from ultrafine insulin needles. Get a 16-20 ga needle and syringe. Push it into corners and fill the rest to even it up. Beautiful results.

:iagree: kinda, paint the area what ever color you want the letters first, then get you some 2 inch masking tape and a stencil the correct size. lay out enough tape to cover that letter on a old piece of glass etc and draw that letter on the tape, cut tape, put over already painted letters and shoot the base color, after dry just remove the tape. note let the color of the letter dry before applying the tape, if going base coat clear coat you can clear over the whole thing;)

Yes, using a syringe is a good idea. I vaguely recall something about that in an earlier post... maybe one of your's Rocky?

Re removing the top coat to reveal underlying color, that seems like the exact wrong way to do it. You want a uniform and complete seal from the top coat of paint. Anything that breaks that hermetic seal is universally a bad idea, IMO. Plus the factory raised the letters so they could highlight them easily ... why invent a new method? Try the roller, and if you don't like the result, wipe it off and try again. Adjust the paint viscosity, roller type, and background masking till you get it right ... without jeopardizing the integrity of the underlying paint.

Ok, end of rant :coffee: :)

A custom sign shop should be able to cut the JEEP out of vinyl that will stand up to the weather.

Could use wide masking tape, then use xacto knife to remove the area that needs paint.I have used this method in the past, just steady with the hand when using the xacto knife. chainsawguy
