I am working to drop my 15 gal tank on my 73. I have the skid plate and the front tank bolt out. Now I am about to tackle the 2 rear bolts on the brackets behind the rear crossmember. It looks to be a pain so far. Is the easiest thing to do to remove them to loosen the rear body mounts and raise the body slightly?

    Thank you.

You can remove it without lifting the body. With a little effort, you can stick your wrench inside the frame to hold the bolts. Once the bolts in the rear crossmember are out, the tank will come out with a little maneuvering. Just keep at it...

I recall spot-welding nuts in on those rear-most skidplate bolts. Made install much easier.

I finally got it off. I worked to get the driver side rear bracket off and was able to wiggle the tank out.

My heart goes out to you, buddy - I just changed the leaky tank on my "73 CJ. It's more tedious than it looks!

I think mine was about 1 to 1 1/2 inches wide.

My cover (military for hat) is off to you for the fuel tank replacement. I recently removed, had the original tank steam cleaned, washed out and reinstalled with a new sensor from MTS, including the new pickup filter... tank is still not fully tightened, but I will slide my green behind back under on Christmas day and tighten up the four (two bolts in the "S" forward bracket) final bolts... although I did cheat (filled prior to fully tightening all bolts) and fill the tank up with over 15 gallons of Sunoco High Test... well, just to avoid any possible rust build up... if it should occur?

Any thoughts or suggestions... have been reading of others that have experienced rust in their tanks?

Again, Merry Christmas to everyone and a great coming New year for all! SEMPER FI!

make sure you use rubber spacers between the tank mounts and the brackets. Otherwise the filler tube will rest on the frame and break loose at the tank. I also reinforced the front tab with large washers and JB weld.

EXCELLENT point to remember... I did reinstall the original "rubber round 1/2" thick X 1 1/2" diameter mounts" on the rear two bolts securing the fuel tank.

Thank you for reminding me of this... in actuality... I had mounted the tank and then found the two rubber mounts with STEEL flat washers and removed the rear bolts one at a time and reinstalled the rubber mount washers and rubber mount(s). Was alot easier without the 15 gallons of fuel... but was not as hard as the original removal. All worth the work though!

Thank you again for the reminder!
