I did a check up on the Jalopy's :v6: today because I haven't had to work on it for 2 whole weeks, I know, shocking. Was getting a little nervous. Anyways, I checked the timing which should be at 7° BTDC and guess what, it was at 0° BTDC. The bolt for the clamp was really tight. I am totally shocked. Could the timing chain and/or gears be shot? I am wondering if someone put steel gears in it because I can hear a ticking type noise coming for the timing chain area.

I don't know about the autotime but if your :v6: is like my :v6: then it is supposed to be set at 0 BTDC.

It doesn't like to run at 0. It really likes 5-7. It takes the throttle better and doesn't back fire through the exhaust.

Easy way to check if the timing chain is loose is to remove the distributor cap and put a wrench on the crank bolt and rotate the engine back and forth and see how much you have to move the wrench before the distributor rotor starts to move. Do you think the ticking you are hearing is the timing chain slapping the timing chain cover? My timing chain and gears were shot on my "68" 225 and the chain was hitting the cover. That was with the original fiber gears before I changed to steel gears.

Spec is 5°. That would be optimum for sea level.
If you're hearing a clacking noise at idle from the front of the motor, it's likely the timing chain rattling

Easy to pull the fuel pump and look in at the timing chain. I was able to get a finger in there and feel how much play was in the chain.

Might look at the mechanical weights and springs also. It can change it 10*.

I'll pop off the pump and take a gander in there. I don't use it anyways. The PO said he replaced the chain...

The distributer is out of my spare 225. I should check the weights to see if they are working properly. The vacuum advance works, I felt it pull.

Looking at the manual, it depends on your distributor. If you have a Delco-Remy IAT-4501 or a Prestolite IAT-4502 it is 5*BTDC. If it is a Prestolite IAT-4502A it is 0*BTDC. I believe the A was CA emmisions as that is what Pete was.:v6:

That would make sense. The CA model was lower compression, so less timing advance would be in order to avoid pre ignition.
