I've been reading online but can't find exactly what I need to do. I have all the bolts off and the transfer case is separated from the tranny by about 1/4" but it's still connected to maybe the yoke inside the tranny? What step am I missing? Its a '72 with a t15 and d20

Should just come off. You are supporting the transmission?

its on the crossmember still. If I move the transfer case I can see the gears moving in the tranny (I have the cover off)

You need to get pressure off of the gear between the trans and TC. Put your bolts back in so the TC does not fall off. Then put a block of wood on top of a jack under the bellhousing to support the transmission and the back of the engine. A bottle jack or the screw jack from your Jeep works fine for this. Lift up enough on the jack so there's no weight on the crossmember. Remove the cross member completely. Undo the bolts and the TC will come right off. Be careful if you're going to muscle it down - it's heavy. Better to put a floor jack or transmission jack under it if you can.

This is from memory when I did it 35 years ago, but I think that's right. Somebody here will comment if I'm missing something.

This summer I removed and installed my dana 20 transfer case, no lie...4 times. I was chasing a noise and rebuilt the case once then swapped with another then had a leak and re sealed it then put the original back in etc... I did it with the cross member off and on. On makes a couple of the bolts harder to remove but do-able. out of all my in and out installs one time the case was stuck and just wouldn't come free of the gear. it took a second pair of hands on the inside of the vehicle to apply prying pressure from the top to break it free. Used a piece of wood so not to gouge the metal flange. The case is heavy maybe 75-80#. Good luck with your removal, and get some help on the top side while you are on the bottom.

My tub is off so it made it a lot easier, I put my jack under the bellhousing like timgr said, strapped my trans up to my hoist and lifted it to just the right angle to where I was able to wobble the TC off. Probably a little more involved than necessary, but if you have the tools, might as well use them haha

The gear that's bolted to the output shaft of the tranny is a very tight fit in the hole in the front of the transfer case. You have it have it lined up just right to get it to slide off.

open your inspection cover you will see the shaft that connects trans to transfer case it has a gear , on end of the shaft is either a bolt in the end of shaft or a nut remove it take washer out than slide gear out
than your transfer case will come free

NOTE: the gear will not go through case
that is why you cant get it free
