A buddy of mine was trying to explain this to me, but I got lost. Something about using a 4.3 HEI distributor and the dist. gear off an AMC 360??

Any links on how to do it? I've tried looking, but not much luck finding clear instructions.

...yeah, cause that never happens man ;)

Looked at Mallory Site. 12 volts to control module but ballast resistor to coil if not internal ballast resistor. Apparently some Mallory coils have internal ballast resistor some do not.

Ended up calling Mallory today... service department advised me that any coil that is 1.4ohms would do the trick... coil doesn't need to be Mallory to run the rest of the Mallory dist parts.

So I picked up a ford canister style coil today.. napa $30 part... I will let you know what happens.

Picked up some connectors and 10 gauge wire too. If it works I will rewire the whole thing :D

Yep, when mallory first came out with the internals for the distributors, the mallory Hi-output coils were optional.

Installed the Ford canister coil tonight... worked perfectly. Fired up quicker than ever... but more importantly didn't die after 15min ;)

Tried it multiple times just to make sure it wasn't a fluke... alternator and battery were fine.

Thanks for all the help and input.

Ok... I forgot to mention that it won't shut off with the kill switch. I know it is not a big issue and just needs a diode or resister or idiot light... however, I just want to confirm the following.

The dummy light wire coming off the alternator (white in the diagram) should run straight to a 'light' then to a 12v switched source. This will provide enough resistance for it to shut off...

or I could put in the inline diode and ignore the light... I like the idea of the light for now :p

That is correct on the light. I would keep the light also.

If the fan belt brakes/slips, the ALT light give you an early indicator .

Got the wiring all cleaned up today... ran 10 gauge where it needed to be. The "idiot" light works and the jeep now shuts off with the kill switch. We wired up the volt gauge today also... all works great. A few pics:

"idiot" light is the white switch on the right...
