I'm sure to most of you it won't be a mystery or how to fix it which is exactly the two questions I'm asking. On a 1970 V6 225 CJ5 leaking not dripping a LOT of heavy oil out of this union.

    1) What is the name of the part that bolts the bell housing and the transmission together roughly 4" across?

    2) What is the name, type, and installation steps in replacing this gasket in between the transmission and the mystery piece?

that would be an adapter. There is no gasket on the adapter. Just a front transmission seal and the rear engine main seal. Depending on what oil is leaking is what one needs replacing. Might as well plan to do both if you are there.

I figured it was something like that. It's definitely heavy weight oil, like transmission fluid, not engine oil. Can you tell me how complicated it is to replace these gaskets and what is the removal, replace, and reinstall procedure?

if you don't have one allready, get a service manual. It will help alot. Looks like the body is off so it should be pretty easy. Just pull the trans/t-case assembly. There is a gasket and seal on the front of the trans. There's a part"can't think of the proper name" that sticks out of the front the throwout bearing rides on. 3-12Point bolts and its off.

But of course you can't stop there. While your at it you might as well reseal the top cover gasket, and hey, while you have that off might as well check out the roller bearings in the trans...

The 'thingy' Termin8ed is talking about is the front bearing retainer. There are seals on it as it attaches to the front of the tranny, and on the nose cone where the trans main drive gear (or input shaft) goes through to the clutch/pilot bearing.

With where you are now, it's an easy fix to pull the tranny, tcase off the BH and get it sealed up.

When you remove the front oil seal holder aka the part that the throwout bearing rides. Make sure the front input shaft does not move forward. As there is a lot of needle bearings that the input shaft rides on. If that happens, get the needle bearings out of transmission housing and use grease or vaseline to hold needle bearings in place and reinstall the input shaft.
