So I have been studying this diagram to build a frame for my 56 cj5. tonight I noticed that it seems to indicate that the rear springs are ~56 inches long. thats not right. I mean #12 + #13 should be the rear spring length, right? Also notice that #12 + #13 sums to a larger number than #15 which is supposedly longer (according to the diagram).

Am I reading this wrong? Is #13 wrong? I mean 44.69 seems like its longer than a rear ECJ5/6 spring.

Spring length is longer than #12+#13. That is the distance from the spring hanger to shackle bracket.

OK, sure. Either way no early cj5 has or had a 56+inch rear spring.

I am pretty sure thats the diagram for the later cj's notice the front crossmember? The diagram I have in my fsm for the earlier units is different than that.

It is definitely a diagram for a later CJ, notice it has the wheelbase at 84" for a cj5 and a 104" for a cj6. For an early it should have been 81" and a 101".

I didn't even notice that, but yes, it's not for an early.

is the over all length still 131.38? I hope so, cause thats how long my frame is!

so do we assume that #13 is wrong or #12?

If you used those numbers it is to long for an early body, youi have to remember the intermediates and later frames were designed with a longer wheelbase and to accomodate a straight 6. Should be 128-7/16" OAL. Thats according to my service manual.

That diagram is from an 73 jeep FSM. I scanned it in myself a few years ago (i know because its crooked:) )

It does appear that its incorrect. I would assume the centerline to centerline, for the spring hangers is 44.69 considering the springs are 42in eye to eye.

73cj5, I think you may be the only person who actually read what I wrote on the first post LOL! Your reasoning sounds good to me.

1969_CJ5, that is a useful diagram. I wish I had it a few months back! :)
