While pulling the engine off my '64 cj5 (ALL RIGHT! down to the frame!) I noticed the Prestone Generator on my F-head listed 10W as it's output wattage. Really? It'll only charge the batttery at .83AMP? When nothing else is running? That sounds like it can't possibly work with any sort of headlights.

If that's the max it'll output I think I'm just going to pull the whole thing and drop a nice internally regulated SI alternator in it's place.

Is it really such poor output? I'll get some pictures of the tag in the morning. I had a dead camera tonight.

dont sound right to me. I know that the generators dont charge as good as alternators or as fast, but they do charge good enough to keep up with normal loads ( like driving at night with headlights on etc) the biggest trouble with generators is alot of short trips where starting the engine several times and not running it long enough for the generator to have time to charge the battery becomes a issue. even in this case it may take several days to drain the battery, so in a nutshell they just dont charge as fast or at as high of a ampreage as a alternator but were enough to get by in most cases.

^I agree-even with the light electrical load in an old Jeep, it's gotta be able to put out 30-40 amps to keep up with headlights, heater, ignition, etc.

Not realistic. Your headlights are 65 watts each (9004 sealed beam).

Yes, I'd guess something like 35 amps max, so 35*12 = 420, something like 400-500 watts max.

I'd guess the 10W is some other marking.

Yup, on closer inspection today, turns out that's part of the part #CJP 740 A 10W.
