1975 CJ5 w/258. 60,000 miles ....recent spring upgrade to Rancho 1.5" lift. Pretty much a stock 75 with American racing wagon wheel rims.

Went to a Kaufmann Tire today to replace all four stem valves on the CJ. One had recently failed which led to rapid air loss, luckily it was parked. The current Goodyears have good tread and only about 10,000 miles on them but they are 12 years old. Kaufmann said they have a company rule to not even touch any tires that are over 6 years old due to rubber deteroration.

This is my daily driver (granted short commute) but safety is of primary importance. Looking for recommendations of radial tires that are quiet, soft ride, aggressive tread pattern and heavy duty. I plan on putting the type of valve stems that are threaded and mostly metal not rubber. Current tires are 31-10.50R15. Right now looking at BFGoodrich ALL-TERRAIN.

I welcome all suggestions or comments.........

That's what I run. On my Jeep, my truck, had them on my ZR2, used to run them on my full size Blazers.................

I like the looks of the Hankook Dyna Pro as well...

I'd recommend the BF Goodrich A/T's or the general grabber A/T's. Both very good tires.

I've had great service with BFG tires on my CJ and several daily drivers. I'll definately buy them again. I think the choice of tread pattern is a personal one. The Long Trails have served me well on the daily drivers. The M/T are exceptional off-road, and not too bad on the highway. Someday, I might try some A/Ts.

BFG AT's are a good all around tire. That particular type has been around for a long long time...there must be something good about that.

My choice for more aggresive tires is always the Yokohama Geolandar M/T

For a good off-roadable daily driver tire, I go with Goodyear Wrangler Radials

I agree with just about everyone else. The BFG A/T is a purdy darn hard tire to beat when it comes to a combo of street friendly and trail worth. It aint no mudder by anymeans but does purdy good on the rest of the stuff. The only other all terrain that I have had experience with (that I care enough to mention) is the Big O A/T's.

I have Cooper Discoverer STT's on my CJ and have been very happy with therm-they're a lot more agressive than an all terrain type tire, but they aren't too noisy. And they work great off road!

My tires are from 1996, but they seem OK. Based upon your findings, I really should replace them and have thought about this before. Especially now the rebuilt Jeep easily does 65 and I have done almost 1000 miles driving the interstate to work this summer on these 14 year old tires (am I really that old now).

I too like BFG AT, I am on my 3rd set on 2 trucks, plus my father has run them since the 90s too. For my Jeep I am looking at the new BFG KM2s... I think I will buy them as soon as I can convince myself there is something wrong with these.

I did not care for the Goodyear Wranglers I ran. Pulled them off for BFG ATs on my truck after just 20K miles. I specifically buy my tires for the snow in my area. I think the BFGs are about the best A/T snow tires I have tried. They bite and clean well for an AT.

I think Costco's running a $70 back or off or something special on the BFGs. If you've got more money than sense, the offer applies to Michelins too. :D

i say take it to a different shop. Genrally they say after 10 years they start getting old. But this really depends on the compound of the tire and the conditions it was subject to. If they are in good shape with no dryrot theres no reason to replace them. Your not racing it or even going over 65mph. I have a porsche and hang out with alot of racers and people who know alot about tires and they would agree. Its just that companies policy. 12 years is not enough of a reason to replace them. thats exactly what they want you to do its all about the money

Want to thank everyone for their input. I decided on the BFG All-Terrain and I found a great deal at Discount Tire here in the Cumming, Ga area. I had used them before and was happy with their service and they beat the competition handsdown. Kauffman had quoted me $718.00 d/out and Discount sold them to me for $702.00 d/out WITH the $60.00 BFG rebate and the screw in valve stems. Getting them mounted in the next few days and I will make sure to post my opinion of the tires.

I considered just replacing the valve stems but as I stated, safety was my primary concern. I can't imagine the results of a high-speed (70mph in my jeep) blowout on the highway. NO power brakes, NO power steering, NO airbags and the tendency of these suckers to roll when sideways.

Replacing tires every 12 years sounds reasonably economical too! Thanks again for the responses.........

Well, had the new tires put on yesterday and what a difference ! Feels like I've got new shocks and steering wheel vibration has been eliminated (comparatively speaking !!). Much smoother ride and better handling also. Definately recommend the BFG All-Terrain...........
