exhaust question?

I just recieved some stock exhaust manifolds to replace the headers. The stock exhaust manifolds have a flat surface that the exhaust pipes attatch to, am I missing a piece. I don't quite see how an exhaust doughnut mates to a flat surface.

 

V8 or 6? Year? You should put this stuff in your sig or your message.

You should have a hear riser block on the driver's side, between the pipe and the manifold. The manifold side of the ehat riser uses a flat gasket as I recall, and the pipe side has a doughnut.

 

These manifolds are on a 74 cj5 with a 304. If someone could look at there stock set-up and let me know what's going I'd appreciate it. thanks

That end goes into the manifold and the rounded end goes into the exhaust pipe.

 

A picture is worth a thousand words, thanks. I guess I've just worked on too many chevys where both sides are beveled.
