plumbing the heater (or) Do real Jeeps need heaters?

    Cold weather will be upon us soon.

    When I acquired the 1959 CJ5, it had no heater. In fact, it did not have the plate that covers the heater hole in the firewall. There was evidence of putty where a former heater was.

    So, I found a rusty former heater (on the G) and have spent a lot of effort cleaning it up. (Electrolysis, man, electrolysis!) OK, what goes where? The Service Manual does not give much in the way of hints for routing water hoses, valves, or air duct. And, since my equipment stops at the squirrel-cage blower output, what connects to that under the dash?

    In vain, I have surfed the many, many web pictures of enthusiast-restored jeeps. Although there are many great shots of immaculate engine compartments, I have yet to find one that is clear about the heater plumbing.

    So far I have figured out that one hose goes to the top of the water pump (on my F-head) and the other goes to a (?) at the back of the head near the firewall. I have a control valve (brass) that should go into one of these lines. Any help here? Pictures would be great. Directions to a heater-equipped early 5 (that is not too far from NE Alabama) would also be good.

    The factory service manual shows the heater assembly and has a brief description, but leaves much to be desired. There is a long rectangular piece that attaches to the squirrel cage, it has 2 ducts pointing up (only one is used, for the defroster) and a vent at the bottom to direct hot air to the cab. It has two "vacuum cans" that control (1) heat the cabin, (2) heat to the defroster. The controls bolt under the dash to the right of the steering column. It includes the switch for the two speed fan, a slide bar to control the heat level, and 3 push buttons that direct vacuum to the cans (diaphragms). off, heat, and defrost IIRC. Seems like the heat control panel was only v6 models someone correct me if that is off. Everyone I have talked to said the slide bar attached to and controlled the air door on the air box under the hood, and controlled the heat level by mixing cool vent air and hot air that went thru the heater core.
    On my jeep the slide bar was attached to a valve installed in the heater hose. it could restrict or shut off the water flow thru the core. Then I had a Push/Pull knob on the dash that controlled a cable that controlled the air door. Now, don't know if the heater valve in the heater hose was factory, but I swear the push/pull knob is, it has writing on the knob and matches the style of all the other OEM knobs. Have not seen another like it though. I would post pics but the wife has the camera visiting her parents.

    Pre 65 or 66 models (not sure the break point) do not have any vacuum controls - its all manual. Mine has three push/pull knobs (like manual choke knobs) to open or close
    1) the flap at the heater core (fresh air flap)
    2) the flap in the air box under the dash to direct air to defrost or floor
    3) the heat control valve (heater hose in-line valve) that controls coolant flow into the heater core.

    One of the knobs also has a twist function that selects the fan speed (Off, Low, High). This assembly is mounted right in front of the shifter on the bottom of the dash and is 100% stock.

    I don't think the heater cosre cares which way the water flows through it. If you look at the points on the engine where the heater hoses connect (on the F134 anyway) it seems logical how to hook the heater hoses.

    There have been several threads on this subject in the past. I have posted several pictures of the valve.

    FWIW the heater controls Russell mentions are the same as in the newer Willys wagons and trucks, even the water valve he shows is the same. Only difference is the mounting location. They have a bracket that mounts to the firewall.

    You'll notice that the fresh air inlet (4.5") is offset to one side ie not centered on the housing. Something I learned is that the CJ's are offset one way and Willys pickups and maybe wagons were offset the other way. Learned this when I bought a used heater. The tops interchange with the bottoms so I was able to reuse my good top and replace my hacked up bottom (talking about the housing for the heater core).

    Here's a pic of the control knobs I mentioned earlier and of my heater box and the fan motor before I installed them.

    My air box (a '63 version) - the under the dash box - is completely different than the '70 model version that Jim (aka TigerShark) showed, so your '59 will probaly look different. Mine was originally made out of cardboard and had rotted. The flapper part was metal though. I remade the box out of aluminum and it works great.

    The under the hood part that mounts on the firewall is 100% the same for all models I think.

    The newer version under dash air box could work if you have the vacuum operated controls to actuate the vacuum flaps.

    Glenn - Good pix (better'n I've found yet!) Can't quite tell what hose fitting replaces my plugs front (pump) and rear...right angle?

    Schardein & TigerShark - Yes, the inside box is my missing link - I'm too early for the vacuum dashpots though.

    Russell - Yep, I have the 3-knob set (but my cables are froze up tight.) I have your water valve and the 'offset' on my engine-side airbox is OK for CJ

    The likelihood that I will be putting around this winter is a bit remote, so the whole heater thing is in the <non-essential> catagory. But with your help, I know what parts to be seeking.

    Use either 45 or 90 degree fittings for your hoses, the cables could probably be soaked in something to free them up.

    I have one '67 CJ-5 with an early International Scout box heater. Real simple set-up, the box mounts up under the dash and can be easily plumbed with flex type ducts for defrost or dual output. Is realy small and fits decently. Only has a couple of wires.

    A real Jeep does NOT need a heater........but let's face it you tough guys.. A real man (over 40 at least) sure does,' cause only the young and ignorant can freeze their gonads off and say they are having fun.
