Brake Master Cylinder for 71 CJ5

    Anyone know where to get a dual Reservoir master cylinder or rebuild kit for a 71 cj 5?

    What I have is for the V6 and has 2 different bore sizes internally with 3/8 output. I can find a reman master cylinder but it has only a single bore size and the output is 1/2". Can I just put new fittings on the brake lines and every thing will be fine?

    I found that most places show the single master in there catalogs.

    Got mine at the local NAPA, they had it in stock.

    You mean the original step bore type?
    I have tried at NAPA, and they showed it as obsoleted, the kits also.

    I did some research looking for a kit for mine in both the '69 and '70, and couldn't find one. The advise I got was to convert to one of the 1" bore cylinders and install a proportioning valve to the rear brakes to prevent rear brake lockup.

    I bought mine around 2002, it may be obsoleted now. Yes mine is a duplicate of the orginal including the Lockheed part number on the side.

    Probably the cheapest proportioning valve would be the adjustable ones from Wilwood.

    Good Luck. I purchased a single rebuild kit at Napa and used the rubber boot and "C" ring. I've purchased a dual reserve kit from a Jeepster parts place. Won't work. You are better off buying a brand new Dual Master Cyclnder for $200 if its that bad. My rubber was still good, so I just honed the cylinder out, cleaned it all out, and no leaks.

    I had already talked to Carl. He does not have anything for the 71 V6 CJ5. He did recommend a place that could rebuild the master cylinder better than new: White Post (www..whitepost.com). I chose to replace the master cylinder with what NAPA is showing (TS 101292). It is a dual Reservoir master cylinder. Also indicated for the 74 CJ5 which is where my 11 inch brakes came from. The issue there is that the fittings to the original brake cylinder are 3/8 and the replacement are 1/2. So I had to manufacture some brake lines from the master cylinder to the brass block where the lines go to the front or rear.

    "Herm the Overdrive Guy" sells them with the correct valve for either disc /drum or drums front and rear.

    Auto Zone Fenco New/Master Cyclinder #NM1373 $80.99. Before NAPA changed ther web site I crossed that number to a NAPA number, bench bled and I have breaks. I know that the master cyclinder I bought from NAPA was not that expesive. That is what I did for my 71 with a V6. Hope that your not in the market for a new radiator, because there are no inter-changes for 1971 with a V6.
