Don't wanna thread-jack.... How do you protect a closed space you're gonna weld over??

Attach a rag to a coat hanger wire and spread around rust converter and/or paint the best you can.

For the back of the spliced script panel, I painted it with a sealing primer. When I cut the rust out from the bottom of the tailgate I'll have pretty good access to spread the rust converter over the rest.

    Mike,
Nothing wrong with using a "backer" method like you show. It will make things stronger [not really a concern but] and will also give you more meat to weld to. You could even plug weld in the areas you use the backer and tack the other areas then smooth with a light coat of filler.

Just an update. The logo came out pretty decent I think.
I did add backers to the corners. Would've helped to have some more though out the rest of the edges. It's a lot easier to weld the fill with the backer than just the gap. Lesson learned for the next time.

I still have a little more filler fine tuning to do, but it's pretty close to being done. Time to get off this little project and move on to other stuff. I'll finish it off as I replace the rusted hinge and lower section with new metal.

Thanks. Feels good to make some progress on something. I've got five different tasks going with the Wagon right now and not making much headway on any of them.

It was a good learning experience with welding on that thickness of metal. My Wagon and my next project are going to need a lot of it.
