Sorry for being a moron but I'm new to the jeep scene and have never worked on a manual transmission. I'm pulling the engine on my M38A1 and have some stupid questions.

I'd like to pull the engine-alone; can I simply remove the engine to transmission bolts? What else do I need to do?

Sorry; looking to get a decent manual soon.

    thx.

Welcome! no such thing as stupid questions, just stupid mistakes from not asking!

Make sure all wiring is unhooked, all the fuel lines un done, and the exhaust unbolted or cut. Throttle linkage as well. Radiator hoses, etc. Removing the front grill and radiator helps tons.
The engine to tranny bolts are all there is, as well as motor mount bolts. If the transmission/transfercase mounts are in good shape, the assembly will stay in place. Remember an engine hoist is also known for testing strength of anything you forgot to unbolt. Be safe!

The tranny and motor are a unit as well. The motor is held up by motor mounts. The tranny is held up by the tranny mount and the back of the motor. Before you remove the tranny bolts, you need to support the tront of the tranmy. I ususally use a jack and once the motor is removed, I support the tranny with a jackstand.

You have that backwards... If you pull the tranny out the back of the motor will fall. But the tranny and transfercase are a unit, sharing 2 longitudinal mounts between them. If they're in good shape, they'll stay in place.

    thanks for the info!

Actually I have the engine chained up, hoist attached, everything is disconnected and trans-engine bolts removed. My issue is that the clutch or something in the transmission seems to be stuck inside the bellhousing--I can't separate the engine from the transmission more than an inch or so.

This frustrates me as it should be a simple thing.

    thx again.

Didn't know that. All motors I've ever pulled (not many) the motor will stay just fine with the motor mounts still attached. But every tranny I've ever pulled, (again, not many) are held up by the back of the motor. Once disconnected from the motor, it would tip forward and fall down and hit the ground if not supported at the front edge............

If you have removed all four of the Bell housing to Transmission bolts... or all of the Engine to Bell housing bolts. Then you must have the transmission shaft in a bind or the throwout bearing and spring in a bind. Either way it's bound up because you don't have even support under everything and either your engine or transmission is tipping a little bit and causing a bind. Be careful.... too much binding can bend the transmission shaft causing big repair $ and head aches! Make sure you are coming out even. After an inch or two it should be free.
