Ok so I broke my steering column tube and just welded it back together for a quick fix. I was just looking for a replacement part and decided I should just do a tilt column. So brand new they are like $700 and I could only find ones guarenteed to fit a 76 or newer. Will this fit a 74 and does anyone know what tilt column out of a junkyard vehicle will fit?

Roger the search function, but can you put a tilt in a manual steering rig? Most of the posts only talk about tilt columns in a power steering rig.

Yes, you can put tilt steering in a manual 1974 cj5. Did it. It's a flaming river column, Here's a pic....

I don't think there's any difference technically, except for the shaft size / spline count on the steering gear. The two types use different bell couplers.

A tilt column might be better suited to a power steering setup, because you'd usually pick a smaller steering wheel. The bus wheel gives you some added leverage with the manual steering gear.

I was thinking of going with a little smaller wheel. I'm not talking about going to a 13" or anything like that, just a little smaller to get it off the legs. I am debating going with power steering when I tear it back down and treat the frame/tub again. I haven't done any research into power steering with a 304, but I may do it and the disc break conversion.

It's been a while since someone wrote on this post, but I'm quite interested in knowing exactly which steering column you used from Flaming River....

    Thanks!!!!
