With all the hassle of finding the power steering pump brackets to mount on the passenger side of the '72 258 engine, and collecting the rest (pump, hoses, gear), I'd like to put a tilt steering column in with no hassle.

Does anyone know, would an '80 CJ5 tilt column bolt in without any modification? If mod, how much?

Or, any suggestions, for an easy fit?

    Thanks,

    Phil

Shaft work? I'd like to keep the surprises down too! What would need to be done?

    Thanks!

The column from a CJ won't have to be modified. However, depending on what dash you have (Intermediate, which is 72-75...or 76+ CJ) and what pedals you are using (Intermediate or 76+) you may have some mods to do...likely on the Intermediate equipment.

The Intermediate bracket that the pedals hang off of may have to be ground a bit to accommodate the larger diameter of the steering column. If you have the original 72 dash it may also have to be modified a bit.

To keep it real easy, swap the dash and pedals if possible. Even if you don't, I don't think the mods are terribly difficult, but again, I haven't done them...I chose to replace the pedals and dash to a 76+ style.

I just bought a column, steering shaft, and 76+ cj7 dash, gauges, and wiring harness for 95 bucks. Swapping my steering column, dash, and steering box. Im going PS route, prolly make my own brackets.
