So on the jeep. 73. its got a 304. The exhasut it has now is all rusted out. its got headers into glasspacks that run and dump before the rear wheel. So im pretty sure those are fenderwell headers?? that right?

So i need new headers, and what to run the same setup. Who makes go fenderwell headers? and was thinking of purple hornies? what do you think?

Yes they are probably fender well headers since they are outside of the frame. I known that Heddman (sp?) sells them...and probably a few other manufacturers. I've seen similar setups, including on my own 74 when I first bought it. It seemed to work fine.

    Re: Exhaust help

Heddman does makes headers for it. I was going to go with those and the purple hornies setup, but if I remember right the hornies will be a bit long and hit the rear tires. But that is using the measurements from my stock headers.

I'd buy some iron manifolds and run a quiet single exhaust to the left rear corner. The AMC factory manifolds are pretty good, and tubing headers are a pain, esp. on a Jeep - noisy, fragile, leaky, hot and expensive. You can get low-restriction conventional mufflers that won't make you deaf and will still have a nice sound.

I have had Hedman Headers on my '72 for a long time now. I really like them. I always get compliments on how my CJ sounds, not too loud but not too quiet either. The only drawback I can see is you might have to trim a little of the inner fenderwell of the front fenders to fit them. Especially if you have an aftermarket replacement fender.

Well im not worried about loud because ANYTHING will be quiter than now. and its already got headers on it. so im assuming new ones should fit no prob....

Currently there are holes rusted the size of dollar bills

Yeah, but it had iron manifolds from the factory, so those will fit too. Iron manifolds gotta be cheaper than new headers too, considering you're planning on adding mufflers and pipes as well as the headers.

Not that i have found.... Headers and all the hardwear is 119 and mufflers would be another 80.

I would like to run the side pipes. just cuz they look good. and sound decent

But im open to othe options.

I agree 100% with TimGr. I had a loud aftermarket exhaust setup that the PO put on. I took it all off and put on stock exhaust front to rear. The factory cast manifolds are known for how well they flow. They won't ,crack, break, leak like headers...and there is nothing like factory fit. You have a V8, its gonna bark when you step on the gas even with the stock exhaust. The thing I like the most about the stock exhaust is that it dumps out behind the rear wheel so the sound is behind you, as are the fumes. You don't have to listen to that low reverb and droning sound of loud exhaust...which gets old REALLY fast. Also you said the prices are similiar, but you are failing to take into account that headers won't last like factory cast manifolds. :flag:

Except for the AI ports, all the RH AMC V8 manifolds are the same. The LH on the Wagon/J-truck changes in 1980, but all the '79 and earlier LH manifolds are the same, and any CJ 304 manifolds will fit. So there should be plenty of used iron manifolds out there. Tubing headers are race car tech ... not really appropriate for anything but a race car or a hot rod. Plus a Jeep exhaust system gets banged around a lot - and a conventional exhaust that's between the frame rails will hold up better than headers and side-dump glasspacks.

And cheap headers have a reputation for being ... cheap: thin (warpy, leaky) flanges, thin tubes, poor assembly quality. The Wagoneer guys like the Edelbrock shorties, but their app is inside the frame rail - but there are fenderwell headers for your application that have good, thick flanges and ceramic coating ... the quality is reflected in the price.

I know this is a bit old, but I am thinking about going back to stock manifolds. I have a set lined up, but cant find a Y-pipe. Anybody have a source?

Just an FYI on this....many times people redo the exhaust on these 304's and put piping that is too small coming off the manifolds. Make sure you are using at least 2 & 1/4 inch, otherwise she'll run really really hot.

Well, Walker doesn't make it anymore. They are about the biggest supplier around.

If you have a FLAPS that you are friendly with, ask them to order the pipe for a '76 - it's still available. You'd need to hold it up in position to see if it will fit. It's going to be different, but the differences may be minor. The '74 pipe is a 2-piece installation with a clamp in the middle, and the '76 may be a single piece.

Or else talk to a local muffler shop. I'm sure they'd be happy to fit a system for you. IME the shops like to weld everything, so you won't have any clamps.

The PN might turn up a source ... I'll check when I get home.

I just looked at the Krage site www.jeepdoc.com and they have the exhaust pipe for a '76 CJ-7 for ... $220. I'm thinking the cheapest way to do this would be to have your local muffler shop make the pipe. Check with your FLAPS to see how much the Walker part for a '76 is.

No hits on the Jeep PNs.

I have the coated ones like the ones in the links you provided. I then ran all stainless parts the rest of the way out......Really loud and lots of fumes in the cab all the time....I like it.....for now........thinkin of extending them the rest of the way to the rear......I have a poly tank so am limited on options......

    Without the muffler on...

That's a great set up! I wish I could pull that off, but emissions in AZ (Maricopa County) are too tough to deal with. I would need 2 cats, & 2 mufflers...gets up there in $$$ when you add it all up.
