I am getting ready to tear down my jeep and I was wondering was the general feeling was on powdercoating the frame instead of spraying it with automotive paint?

I figure that the powdercoat will look better and provide better coverage but is hard to touch up and cost more.

I'm sure you'll get differing opinions on this, but your in so-cal so rust isn't a big problem. I painted mine 3 years ago and it still looks great. Also if you ever do mods in the future/welding you'd need to grind it off

I like Interstate Rust Killer. It is easy to prep for and paintable. Or you just leave it with it's dark brown finish which is what I did on my frame.

I painted mine it makes it nice when you go adding bumpers, racks, spring mods and countless other thing as a jeep is never done in my books.

Go with paint. I've seen plenty of powdercoat get a chip and a small rust spot. 2 years later the powdercoat flakes off in sheets as the rust propogates under the powdercoat. Paint is far easier to fix chip and small rust spots.

It looks like it's not much of a choice after all.. Thanks for the input I was leaning towards paint for all the reasons listed. I think that I will go with the wally world rust converter and then a good coat of rustoleum over that..

If the powder coat is flaking off, its because there was a problem with the prep, coat thickness, or cook time. If you are going to weld or mod the frame in the future, then yes, Paint...plus its allot cheaper

Well it's been awhile but I have had my head down working hard on the Jeep and other things. Thought that I would post some updated pic's so that everyone can see how the POR-15 paint looks on the frame.

I cleaned my frame with some degreaser and alot of pressure washing. Then it was a trip to the sand blaster and afterwards, primer, and then two coats of POR-15. Looks like a frame off of the show room floor.

Paint, easy touchup and it's easy to spot cracks in the frame. If you undercoat it you won't see the crack if you develop one.

I had my frame powdercoated and it looks wonderful. But my plans for my CJ5 are likely much different than what a lot of you guys use yours for. Mine's going back to as near-stock as possible, and will stay that way. No radical mods or uses in my plans.
