    trans/t-case severe leak...correct seal position???

I just replaced my T-150 with another a few weeks ago. I took the D20 apart and replaced all the gaskets and seals.

Now my tranny is going dry every week-10 days. The t-case is over filled as when I check its level it pours out the fill hole. But the trans will only have an inch or so of fluid in it.

Am I correct in saying the T150/D20 do not share lube...? It seems to me my trans is leaking into the t-case which leaks and leaks moreso since it is overfull.

Any suggestions. It looks like I will need to pull the t-case and inspect/replace the gasket between them again...?

The trans does not appear to be leaking anywhere else (other than some mild seepage at the shifter plate).

The T-150 uses a rubber seal on the output gear of the transmission, so yes, you are right - no oil should transfer. The seal does not appear in the TSM (at least not in the '76 TSM), but it does appear in the parts catalog.

Have you taken the gear off the end of the transmission mainshaft? The seal should be there.

Yeah we did. The seal was there.

Maybe we damaged it somehow. Is just that seal replaceable?

Yes. I presume this means you have not replaced it.

Seems likely that would be the source of the oil, since it's meant to prevent oil from transferring to the TC.

Didn't the 150 have a recall back in the day, they were putting that seal in backwards and causing it to leak?

No we did not replace it.

And they have been put in backwards...Novak says the seal is supposed to install spring side pointing to the front of the tranny.

Is it just a matter of removing the nut off the output shaft and then sliding the t-case input gear/bearing assembly off that shaft to replace the seal?

If so...would I need a press to do so (meaning I have to pull the transmission out again...?)

I think I figured it out but correct me if I'm wrong.

I did what I mentioned above. On my broken t-150 I took the nut off the output shaft. slid the t-case gear off and there was the seal...this should be the seal you speak of right?

I knew it was somewhere in there (man that sounds ignorant) but did not think to replace it when we had it all apart.

    Big honking seal.

I have a new seal and I think I know which direction it should go...but want to be certain.

According to what I have read...and the way the seal came out of my broken T-150 this side (spring is visible from this side) should point toward the front of the trans.

And this side should point out towards the t-case. Is this correct...?

Correct. Spring-side of a seal is always on oil side. In this case, you don't want oil to move from the transmission to the transfercase, so the spring is installed on tranny side.

    Murphy's law...if it can happen...it will.

Learned a lesson tonight. Check to see if there even is a rear seal on a T-150 prior to installing it.

Pulled off the t-case input gear...no seal at all.

No wonder it was leaking. I guess my ASSumption that it was there was wrong. mehh :D

I feel your pain. the t176 drivetrain i had on my shop floor leaked out while i was away for a week. found it was leaking from the front of the tranny. went to replace the front seal, to find no seal. got the motor in the jeep and now theres an oil leak around the tcase ish. I'm willing to bet on what it is..... luckily the tcase has to come off anyway.

Sorry to highjack your thread, but does the D20/T14 combination also have this seal?
I did not find any when I stripped mine.

Also, if the two share the same oil, what level will I use?The D20 or T14?
