    Hi all,

My 58 CJ-5 is coming along nicely. Water pump, thermostat, brake M/C, engine mounts, cap & rotor, new steering, etc etc

Thing still won't start - got spark all the way to the cap but not to the plugs so next I get new wires (and prob points and condenser too). Meanwhile we set points and gapped new plugs....BUT currently.....

1 - Firing order is determined but the wires to the cap we think are wrong.. we were going for TDC of course to get the rotor to point to "1" but we are not sure if we are at TDC or at 180 out of TDC so can any one tell me... if i am looking at the distrib by leaning over the right side fender, I have a cap with holes at about 1 o clock (really about the equiv of the hour hand being at 12:30), then 4 o'clock, 8 o'clock and ten o clock. I think using that order and going clockwise the wires should go 1,3, 4, 2 so that "1" is at the 12:30 ish position and so on...
OR OR OR is the 1 wire supposed to be over at 8:00ish "3" at ten, "4" at 12:30 etc? Wish the cap was marked!

2 - Hose that runs to wiper motor on the windshield - is that required? Mine is broken and hanging off the wiper motor. Where does the other end of the hose connect? Is that causing some kind of unwanted drop in air pressure somewhere since the system is not "closed"? Or is it not a big deal unless I want a wiper? (Passenger side is a manually manipulated handle on my CJ)

3 - I got the full engine mount set, I did the front mounts, I THINK I see where the round rubber cup and bolt go to mount to the tranny (passenger side off center? The new parts I got look a little different than the ones in there....) But where the hell does this heavy oblong less-than-half-a-circle mount go? LOL

All info is always appreciated, NEXT WE BLEED THE BRAKES!

With the F head (Hurricane) engine, put your finger over the front spark plug hole and turn the engine. When it pushes your finger, you are on compression #1. Observe the timing mark and set to 5* before top dead center. Install the distributor with the rotor pointing at the hole (when cap is installed) about 5 o'clock. Firing order is 1-3-4-2 and counter-clockwise. Since you have vacuum wipers you should have the dual action fuel pump. It has a vacuum built in it for the wipers. A single action fuel pump could have been installed along the line and the engine would still run fine. Don't know about the mounts. Sorry.

Hmmmmm........... Sounds like you got a great project going!:D
My advice is to get 1-2-3? manuals on these jeeps and keep them handy!
    Bathroom reading, etc.!
I second what was said, but, want to add that the timing marks will come up at TDC and 180 from TDC, but, I learned over the years that sometimes the outter part of the balancer will spin on the rubber mounts.
I was taught (and I taught my sones) to crank it over till it pushes your finger off the hole and with a piece of hanger wire on the piston turn the motor over BY HAND til the piston is at TDC.
    Then check the timing marks.
Get the rotor TIP, EDGE, to line up with #1, and either with a multi miter or or a thin piece of paper between the points, slowly turn the dist til the points JUST open, (that's where it fires, the points break the circuit to the coil, collasping the field making mega volts out the coil wire to the dist rotor, this send it to the spark plug wire, etc....
Pretty easy! (after you do it, til then it's brain surgery with a butter knife)!
If you don't have spark???? Check your point gap, or better crank it with a dwell meter and see what your dwell is, (dwell is the amount of degrees your points stay open??? er closed I can never remember).

Good luck and let us know what you find!
    Joe
Half the fun of having a project like this is the learning curve! Remember this is for fun and relaxation when you banging your head off the bumper cuz the J.O.B. is going to sheet!

Leaning over your passenger side fender and looking at the distributer - there should be a small tube coming out of the lower part of the distributer on the fire wall side at around 9 oclock that bends up and has a little spring loaded cap on it. The oiler for the distributer. This will put your cap with one hole at about 11 oclock and the one opposite at 5 oclock. The 5 oclock one is your #1 position on the distributer.

If you have your points set to where they should be and the cap in this position you should get spark at the plugs. This is with the timing mark set at a tad before top dead center. If you get spark from the #4 plug instead of the #1 plug, either turn the engine over, (watching the rotor turn) by hand until you get the rotor in the 5 oclock position. Or switch the plug leads from one to four and the others from two to three.

Some engines do not have timing marks. Mine doesn't. Some of them (the real early ones) had the timing mark on the fly-wheel. On the flat heads you line it up in a small hole above the starter motor. On the F-heads this hole is covered by the starter motor. By switching the leads I was able to get it to start. Who ever had it before me, or the ones before that had put the oilpump in with the slot 180 degrees from where it should have been. And they put the distributer in with the oiler pointing toward the radiator, which made it unusable.

I have since fixed all that. And made my own timing marks.:D
