What have people done for a Tank w/V6 Swap

    I am very displeased with my purchase from MTS..
    Before I call them back to return the item I want to know what people here have done for fuel sources with a V6 Swap..
    I want to retain the under the tank seat and I am keeping the large gauge cluster.

    Can I simply get a metal tank with the six screw unit and add a return line?

    and you were ok with how the sending unit is held in place?

    Just out of curiosity what is wrong with the way the pickup is held inplace? I looked at there website but did not really see a problem with the bolts and clips.

    I've had two or three of their tanks. Never had any issues.

    Current tank is a rear-mounted tank, sending unit was secured just fine.

    Ill try and take some pics today...

    it looks nothing like the picture..
    the pictures looks as if there is a metal insert or rin as part of the tank.. this is not the case.

    well my 2a has screws and dumb little metal pices that clamp the unit down which really kinda sucks. My 67 w/v6 and return has a twist ring like most modern tanks. the 2a has a straight neck and the 67 has a crokked one.

    I used my stock 2A tank.
    you don't need the return.
    that's my opinion.

    my 225 fuel pump has no return line, so I plugged the one on my tank.

    I used a MTS plastic tank and sending unit and am very happy with it. Two line on the top of the sender were the same as the steel tank. With the ethanol in the fuel today I think plastic is the way to go. Just my two cents.

    Trust me I want to go platic and with the setup I already bought..
    I just think the way the sending unit attaches to the tank is crude and chintzy.. I put my camera in my bag so I dont forget it at the office.. I will deff post a picture tonight of what I dont like.. you can then all tell me if im being over critcal and to shut up and use it, or if I have a leg to stand on.

    Here is what I wasn’t happy with:

    here is the sending unit opening..
    first problem I ran into was the molded tab cutouts did not match the sending unit well.. in the picture you can see they are slightly off 180* from each other.. the sending unit had them at 180*..

    Here is a shot of how to mount the lock ring.. screws held down sheet metal tabs to form a compression fitting. the lock ring does not twist and lock as in an OE application.

    And finally here is the completely assembled "lock ring" with the sheet metal tabs holding it down.

    I do have to say, has the sending unit fit properly and I was able to get a good seal on the sending unit I may not have been so bothered by everything. I do see how it works, and in a jeep that may never see an off camber situation it might be sufficient. But for the $200+ I spent buying everything I would hope the product would be better engineered. I have seen many plastic tanks before that had a metal insert to accept a true lock ring. maybe I’m too critical because I’m in the parts business, but when I spend money on a solution I want it to fix a problem, not create other ones.

    It's not clear to me. Do the pictures show the locking ring as you received it from MTS or if the sheet metal screws and handcut square washers are something you added to secure it better?

    Did you contact MTS?

    I used a F4 metal tank from JC Whitney that I purchased when I replaced the original tank when I still had the F-head. I did not use a return line, but I did a fuel pressure regulator. Fuel system works fine.

    The factory fuel tank in my 1980 Ramcharger is plastic. The sender is a flat plate with 6 holes that match up to the drilled holes. A cork gasket seals it quite nicely.
    Looks like MTS is trying to make a steel tank lock ring work on the plastic tank as well. Not doing a very good job of it from the pictures.

    YES.. this is all how MTS intends the tank and sending unit to be mounted and used
    ...

    IMO.. they could have provided a circular flange and at least it would have looked like they put some thought into it.

    I really didn’t intend this to become a bashing session directed either toward MTS or me for being an #$%... just sharing an experience and looking for some advice on how to proceed.

    I didn't think you were bashing, I was asking out of interest. I like the idea of the plastic tank. The JC Whitney tank that I have isn't great quality.

    I was asking more in terms of a possible vendor issue, there's always the possiblity of a vendor issue or shipping mix-up. I know when I ordered my body kit from 4wd Hardware, I used a local 4wd shop to bypass shipping. The fenders they tried to pass off on my looked like they'd been kicked around the warehouse for years. It wasn't a fault of 4wd hardware and I got it fixed. Just something to be aware of.

    I'm interested in this as I figured eventually I'll need to replace the JC Whitney tank.

    I have no plastic tank experience with MTS
    I don't blame you
    that set-up looks terrible
    it might work, but for the $$ that just looks crappy.

    I would send it back, that is just a cheap setup and I agree does not quite look like what I would have expected from the pictures on there website. Once you get your money back I would tell them that you showed this to a bunch of Jeepers on a site that thought it was substandard and would never buy it like that.

    yup thats how mine was i had to bend those tabs so they actually push down on the ring. Also dont use a cork gasket. The last one i used decinegrated and cloged up the system ! it is a very cheezy setup but i think its the only plastic tank available. also they suck at packing them. the ones i got were just thrown in a cardboard box with no padding. The filler neck poked right out! no damage though so i didnt complain
