I have a '63 CJ5 I recently aquired an aluminum hard top that I was hoping to put on it. The front of the top is approx. 1.5 to 2 inches short (horizontally) to reach the top of the wind shield. The top has swing out removable side walls, leaving just the rear corners and back window. Is it possible that the top is for a CJ2 or CJ3 or some other Jeep? Is anyone familiar with it. The PO has rivited a aluminum flap to reach the windshield of a CJ5. I just wanted to know if it was something that I should not cut and stretch to make it fit my needs.

If the top is short of reaching the W/Shield, wouldn't that make the doors wrong as well?

i would take a good look at the 3b page, as it has pics of all the factory tops and see which you have.

Its also possible that the top is for a 1976 or newer CJ5. They have a windshield that slopes back further than the older CJs

Could it be just a matter of a little push on the windshield frame? I have notice that soft tops torque the frames rearward enough that the stock latches do little to anchor the frame. This has been true even with new seals.

I just picked up the same top here in NH. I have not tried it on my 72 CJ-5 yet but the doors dont really line up. Im bummed I got the top and doors for $100 and it is in great shape. But it does not seem to fit

Hi Outlaw, I'm sure we looked at both tops and decided they were the same other than yours which had the swing out side panels. I was going to install my top back on my jeep this winter and also have the the same problem your decribing. My top came on mine so I know it fits. The only thing I know I did was replace the rubber gasket under the windshield frame with one that I thought was in better shape. I will look for my old gasket and compare the two and maybe I can dig up a picture with my top and doors installed to see if the rake of the windshield is laid back. I never did finish installing my top just left it sitting on there.

I see now this is an old post, did you figure it out? I hope you did because I was sure it would fit your jeep and feel bad for selling it to you if it won't fit your Jeep. Let me know. I'll send you a pm.

Aren't the windshields of the newer jeeps (72 and up) wider?? narrower?? than the older jeeps(55-71).
I think, (now it hard I know, they said the drugs would catch up with me:rofl:), I saw a NICE fiberglass top at the bone yard, when I measured across the windshield area, it didn't match my measurement of my '61.
The doors were way differenas mentioned before.
You could MAKE it fit with a few hours of work and a few curses!R)

Jeeps, you can't live with 'em, and you can't live without 'em:)

I did find out that for my aluminum hard top like Outlaws to work the rubber molding was cut in half so the windshield would lay back farther. I'm not sure if this top is for a newer jeep or not but with this modified molding in place everything bolts up and the doors line up really good. This might work for other tops too. I'm sure this is a Sears hard top by looking at pictures from other sites.
