Can a different gas fill protector be used?

Whenever I tank up my 1975, CJ-5, I feel at risk. The gas seems to splash back at me. This is, in part, to the fact that I am using 1976+ tail lights. I cannot hold the gas spigot up high enough.

    Here are pics:

A little bit of gas ends up splashing onto my $426 Maaco paintjob. Not that it would break my heart if it got messed up, it would just be a shame to have the paint get messed up due to poor engineering.

So, what are my solutions? I recently added a polymer gas tank, and installed it with a 1976 style skidplate.

    I could install this:

    Or,...

1987+ CJ fuel filler protector...http://www.4wd.com/productdetails.a...lace since it'll be on a 1975? Will it work?

If 19 yr old ricer pilots can custom fab intercooler ducting there is no reason a grown up can't make a better way to direct gas from a filler to a gas tank.

why don't you use small diameter exahast pipe and extend it out with an angle, I'm sure you could fab up some type of mount to bolt in where the current one does and then use soft hose to connect the two?

Use a slower fill rate with the pump nozzle. I've noticed this a few times with my '71 model, which is similar to yours. The bend in the rubber hose is fairly sharp behind the filler tube. You might try holding the filler nozzle at an angle which keeps the fuel flow pointed more toward the tank and less at the bend in the hose.

More likely the air vent hose is bend and there no air flow. My did the same thing until I change the vent hose.

On my CJ it has a slight uphill angle on the fill tube into the tank. Horrible splashback ill i figured out this trick: Start the pump out slow(like a trickle), then over a period 15-20 seconds slowly increase the flow on the pump up to full speed. Works every time and kicks off like normal. ;)

I actually really like this idea. flush mounted square lights would be really cool and custom looking and should not be too hard to do.

Personally I'd put the smaller circular cj5 tail lights back on. I suspect you'd have room to mate your gas filler nozzle fully afterwards, but you won't know for sure until you do. That's a personal preference though, I just dig the older lights compared to big square ones like you've added.

I am afraid that if I put the flush mount tail lights, the back of the Jeep will look like a bathtub. I wish it had a tailgate to break up the monotomy of the back of the thing!

I used the 76 and up filler and cut the stock hose down to fit. You can move the filler down and away from the light some and the new plastic filler end will still cover the old hole. You can kinda see it in this pic.

I like the orig. tail lights too but you already have holes in your tub so the only option is to flush them or keep what you have.

When I put a glass body on my '75, I moved the filler to the side, just behind the wheel arch, instead of on the back.

I'm in the process of putting things back together so......I only put two of the closest screws I could find in just to illustrate what I have decided to do with mine, thats why there's only 2 screws in it. On you filler hose that bolts to the body there is a tab with bolt holes thats used to secure it to the body. I ground of most of the tab only leaving enough metal tab to get a screw from into it to the new stainless mount. Its the screw to the right side of the gas cap if you can see it.

oh, i forgot.......everything except the stainless part is all original. If needed I can take it all back apart and shoot some more pics......I believe i ordered the stainless mount part from a 76 and up....not sure....
