Hi, I was wondering if anyone here could help me out. I had a light knocking sound coming from my engine ever since I have own it which has been about 20years now. I always thought it was a lifter issue. But I narrowed it down with a stethoscope to the fuel pump. I pulled the pump and noticed the arm of the pump was pretty worn. I started the jeepster real quick and noticed that the engine was still making the noise so I looked into the hole where the fuel pump goes and I noticed that the chain seemed loose. I decided to pull the cover off and today noticed after it was off that the chain is loose a bit. The tensioners look in fine shape. I pulled off the distributor drive gear and pulled the fuel pump cam and noticed that it was worn pretty good. I can take a pic of it later to show. Basically its worn about a 1/16th deep at its deepest and shows wear of about a 1/3 of it.
My question is does anyone know where to get one of these?
    Thanks

thanks. for the link to the ta site. I found it on their catalog. Its called a fuel pump eccentric.
Its weird cause Im not sure what exactly is causing the sound? Im assuming its the timing chain, but not sure. Like I said the fuel pump eccentric is pretty friggin worn but I ran it without the pump lever on it and it seemed to make the same sound. Im not sure how to tell if the timing chain is bad or not.
The symptoms is it would knock from the front timing cover area at idle and then i would rev it up and it would go away. It seemed to get louder as the engine ran longer. Im going to go ahead and replace the timing chain while I am in there.

    Classic, typical timing chain noise.

May be the advance weights in the distributor are loose or the springs that attach to them are broken or timing chain is slapping the front cover.

    Hey Patrick,

Do you know if they make the gear replacements for the timing chains? The version I am talking about eliminated the use of a timing chain.

Timing chain noise was a big enough issue in these engines that in '81 for sure, maybe earlier, Buick went to nylon gears. Had one in a Regal LTD once that broke some teeth off. Imagine my surprise to find toy gears when I pulled the cover off.

Not for the odd-fire V6, timing gears aren't available, at least that I'm aware of.

Just stock type with tensioners, and double-roller type chains.

Rocky, I don't see how nylon gears would eliminate the noise. Kaiser used them too IIRC. The noise is from the chain being too loose, not the gears.

The original timing gear (crank gear) in my '71 was nylon, cam gear was steel... Found that out when I went to investigate the timing chain slap in '94 and a 1/4 of the teeth were in the bottom of the cover. That'll give you some chain play! Changed it out with a Cloyes unit from my FLAPS, no problems since.

Recall these engines were originally used in passenger cars, so a quiet engine was a big plus. The nylon gears are quieter, but in a Jeep, I doubt you'll notice the difference.

Yes they are quieter, however, it won't eliminate the noise being described here.

They eliminated a low growl like noise. I went back w/ steel gears in that Regal and you could certainly hear it. It wasn't so bad I'd want nylon gears though.

PLEASE! I didn't say the nylon gears are not quieter. We're talking about a loose timing chain slapping here, the nylon gears have NOTHING to do with this slapping/ticking noise unless they are still in the engine and lost teeth, in which case it can cause this noise. Read the first post...

Ok, OK! :coffee: ;) We get it. I (and Rocky?) was/were just commenting on the plastic gears.

Why? It really has nothing to do with the OP and that noise.
