my 1960 cj that has a 1966 buick 225 in it has a little voltage regulator with 2 terminals FLD and IGN im getting eratic voltage coming out on the ign side so i want to replace it. The one that fits that motor and year is one thats bigger and has 4 terminals one for field and then the other ones are numbererd 2 3 4 , question is can i use that bigger one and just use one of the numbered terminals for the ignition. The reg thats on there now looks like one that would be for the L4 engine that was in there. The other question is the alternator thats on the motor now is a 61 amp and the regulator on it now i think is only 30 amp reg. Ive added an electric cooling fan so i think i may need a higher regulator?????? thanx cw

I think the simplest answer is to "upgrade" to an internal regulated Delco alternator. This would eliminate the external regulator and the question of the 2 wire vs 4 wire hookup. All that is needed is a heavy gage wire from the Batt post on the alternator run to the Batt post on your starter solenoid. If you go this route you can get a 63 amp internally regulated alternator. And yes accessories like an electric fan are high electrical consumers and can increase amperage demand.

When my alt blew I went to a the automotive electrical shop here and asked if they could build one for me. They took some spare parts, added new parts and asked me if I wanted 90 amps instead of 63 no extra charge.

They built me a 12 delco but upped to 90 amps for $45.

The 66 Buick 225 came factory with Motorola alternator with solid state regulator. Not sure what you have on your motor? Should have three wires from alt to reg. No terminals or screws. It was a plug-in. Now that being said, we need to know what manuf alt you have on this 225.
