I thought I would give everyone an update on the "Barn Find Surrey". After being tucked away for 35 yrs the Surrey came to life this week. We soaked the cylinders and valves with ATF and let them set a week, then spun the engine over a few times with the aid of 3/4" drive breaker bar then the starter was able to spin it with ease. We drained the fluids and started replacing the usual; new oil w/ lucas additive, filter, points ,condenser, rotor, cap, carb kit, plugs & wires. After several hours of tinkering and the help of my mechanic friend Jim, the old girl came alive! The first few minutes were very smokey, but once the excess ATF was burnt off, carb & timing were set, she smoothed out and runs like a top. I don't plan on a over haul at this time, just want to make it run. I still need a few parts yet to be able to drive it yet and I also need help with a few things.
    1. Missing drive shaft. I will probably need to have one made.
    2. Missing speedo gear and retainer. What tranny's did the dispatch jeeps have in them, and where do you find parts?
The previous owner had the colum shifter jambed and she was stuck between gears I'm sure they removed the drive shaft to be able to move it around. The next project is the brakes, should be a simple wheel & master cylinder rebuild. I will keep you updated, Todd

I expect it's a T-90, but it will have a 2WD mainshaft/tail and the speedo gear and retainer would go there. Look at the side of the case and "T-90" should be there. If it's a 2WD T-90, there were Jeeps that had this setup - the original Jeepster (VJ), 2WD Utility Wagons, early 2WD Wagoneers with the 230 cid OHC six. Studebaker also used the T-90 in passenger cars; I don't know of any other sources, but there may be more.

Didn't somebody point you to a Surrey forum? I can't find the post now, but it's a good bet such a forum could help.

I remember reading somewhere that the column shift linkages were prone to jamming...

Very cool! I can't tell you how much I wish that I'd just done that with my '56, instead of ripping it all apart to "restore it". I've missed out on years of good times because of that.

Is that really a '62? I didn't know they made any flatties that late, other than the 3B's.
