Has anyone bought the 76+ heater control cables and modified them for the 72-75's, since they are so hard to come by?

I know what you mean. I haven't done it but need too. Trying to find parts for the 75 and below cj's can been aggravating sometimes.

No, but I'm planning to use universal manual choke cables on mine. You can get them in the Help! section of your FLAPS for about $5 each.

I also used the universal cables from the auto parts store. Not original looking but functional.

That site has been covered in earlier posts. IIRC everyone who has tried to buy those has been unsuccessful.

It's the plastic sheaths of the cables that break. I am putting the cores of my broken cables into the parts-store sheaths, which will look more like the originals. You can heat up the loop at the end of the original cables, straighten the wire, and pull the core out of the sheath. Not sure how I am going to finish the ends of the cables ... but I have a couple of ideas.

Yes, '72 is different from '73-75. I think the panel and knobs appearance is the same from the late '60s through '72, but of course the '72 heater is different, so the cables will be different.

I was able to buy those 3-4 years ago, but its possible they ran out of there stock. The quality wasn't very good anyway.

I got some good news for folks who are looking for these cables.

I called the folks over at Vintage Jeep Parts and asked them what the deal was with these cables. They were super nice even though they had none to sell. They had not ordered some in a while due to the guy moving locations and he had some down time or something along those lines. They did give me the name and number to the person they buy these from and told me to just give him a call. It was very nice of them to do so when they really didn't have to.

The guy who sells them is named George, and he owns Georges Jeep parts in Ms. Though I have heard of him before I have not ever talked with him till today. I called and spoke to him. This guy was a pleasure to talk to. This is someone who truly loves Early Jeeps, and knows alot about them. If he doesn't have the part, he will give you good info on where you might find it, and even help troubleshoot or offer suggestions over the phone as to what you might want to look at. He currently has 2 of the 3 cables available....and is waiting on a shipment of the 3rd(longest cable). These are USA made as well. He can be reached at 601-542-0013. If you search on here you can find a few posts about some other stuff he has sold with good praise. Give him a call.

Mine have done just that. I was considering putting tight fitting shrink tubing around the broken seem to hold the two pieces together. I wonder if that would work well?

They are, otherwise, in very good condition.

I am in need of new cables as well, for a '73 CJ5. Sheaths have broken on mine as well. Did anyone have luck finding these anywhere (guy George mentioned above or at VintageJeeps) or has anyone found a succesful fix that does not look too aftermarket?

I got mine from Georges back in the summer. I'll see if I can post a picture of my setup. I used a piece of aluminum angle under the dash

I am in the same boat... I purchased the 76 cables and am in the process of retrofitting them to fit my 74. I have found that you can turn down the shaft and thread it to install it in the original locations. the problem I have with the fresh air cable is that it is not long enough. I will try this George character it would be a whole lot easier.
Ill try to post some pic of what I have done thus far.
