Any good recommendations for a replacement top for a '78 CJ5? The top on it now leaks. I've got a cover but it's only a temporary solution.

I've looked and looked and it seems that Bestop is the only game in town but I'm having a hard time letting go of $800 when the replacements for the Wranglers are half that.

    Any suggestions?

I just blew that much on a Supertop. Well worth it especially with the modular zip out ability. Plus, I think 76 and later can get them with tinted windows as an option.

Thanks for the advice Glen. Was it easy to install? I know that's a relative question but is it something that's fairly intuitive or should i take it to a professional?

Haven't received it yet, but had one a few years ago until it wore out. Not hard in my opinion. Easier to stretch the top and secure it on a warm day! Should have good instructions. If not, there are plenty of guys on here who can cheer you on. The Supertop is nice, with no snaps.

My current top leaks when it rains although I'm not sure exactly where..i'm thinking the velcro around the windows and such may be worn out.

Sounds like the supertop is worth the investment. I'm getting my CJ back tomorrow after getting it aligned. I'll just save my pennies. Until then I'll just keep it covered.

    thanks again glen,
    Nate

No problem, Nate. Had I not had one before, I would not have know how much better they are and could not attest to it. Glad to help.

I bought the Bestop Supertop for my '79 a couple years ago. Installation took a few hours, but the instructions are good. There is usually a $100 instant rebate off the $800 retail, at least there was when I bought mine from Quadratec. I don't think the tinted windows were an option for the CJ5 top at the time. Bestop customer service is good too.

I really like it, easy to zip out sides and back for summertime. Quality is very good, in my opinion.

I've got 2 Supertops, both were purchased new. I really like them, and think they fit well.

That being said, don't expect any soft top to seal perfectly against the rain. You'll get some leakage around the tops of the doors.

Patrick, did you try the "bend (tweak) the top of the doorframe" trick? I know it doesn't seal all the way, but it helps.

a "little leaking" would be a blessing at this point. After it sits in the rain there's about 1-2" of water in the front floorboard. Mechanic said i need to get the windshield resealed which hopefully will help.

Oh, yeah. I spend a couple hours with each top "adjusting" after install, and once in a while I adjust them again/ more. I've been using Supertops on my daily driver CJ5 for 12 years...
