    Hi all,

My '58 CJ5 has a three speed manual, the Previous Owner reports that my Jeep has a tendency for "popping out of 2nd when under load".

I have not yet driven this vehicle so I have not experienced this, but can anyone give me an "Oh yeah, that's usually the XXX" answer for this one so I can maybe delve into it while I am in "tinker" mode as opposed to the "I just wanna drive it mode"?

Any conventional wisdom on this problem?

    Thanks in advance!

    Normal for T90.

    Rebuild it.

Search the forum for more information (including this very topic) and parts sources and rebuild help.

re- build the trans. It is usually caused by a worn 2nd gear and syncro assembly. Best to re-build the whole trans while you have it apart.

hey, i dont know if it'll help, but i just saw a post up by a member who goes by Dos Equis... he is selling a t-90 for 200 bucks. i did a search for t-90 transmissions and the title for his post is "53 3b parts". the post is still up. i wouldve jumped all over it had i known about it before. but if your looking for a remanufactured one i have the phone number where you can get one. it costs about $650 but is well worth it... if your interested just message me and ill give the number to you.

the way to approach it is to assume the worst...
meaning the trans needs to come out and rebuilt.
you might get lucky, pull the top cover only, and find a worn shift fork or bad/missing detent balls and/or springs.....you migh not get lucky.
althoug it might be considered normal for it to pop out on de-accceleration, I would say something is difinately wrong if it's popping out on accleration.
maybe you can clarify your "under load" comment ?

Replace the poppet balls and springs in the top loader shifter. I got them www.kaiserwillys.com. Take the shifter off. Take the roll pin out of the shifter fork and slide the rod out and then the old poppets and broken springs will come out. You might have to put some PB blaster in the holes to get the old poppets to loosen up. After the old parts are out put a sheet rock screw in the holes to get any of the old broken spring parts out of the holes. Put it all back together and test drive. Enjoy

CLARIFICATION 3 speed tranny question - "pops out of second"

I asked the previous owner and the tranny only pops out of second on DE-celleration as suggested by some of the repliers to this thread, and can be held in place while foot carefully looms over brake just in case!). So hopefully it will be the repair that is being described. Thanks all for the very useful info! I can't wait to finally drive this thing, hopefully this spring!

flying out of second is a real pita in a cj, that is just about the most perfect gear in a cj for all around crusing, not to fast, not to slow. for what its worth pull the top and inspect the detent balls & springs it may very well be a easy fix, the one in my m38a1 only had 13k on the odemeter and it was doing the same thing. i find it hard to believe with only 13k for anything to be wore out. any way i replaced the transmission with one i already had close to 60k on it and no problems. now i have a low mileage transmission on the shelf when the time comes to go thru one;)

According to Novak the usual culprit wrt 2nd coming out of gear on decelleration is the bushing inside of 2nd gear. Wear allows the gear to skew on the main shaft, and on decelleration this pushes the synchro away from the gear and it pops out. They sell a new second gear to fix this problem.

Worn detents and/or springs would contribute, letting the synchro push away more easily.

FWIW - I have seen this many times over the years. Never been lucky enough to have it be in the shift houseing and it was always the bushing in the 2nd Gear.
