The little "rubber" wheel on my turn signal switch (1975 CJ5) does not have enough traction against the steering wheel hub to self-cancel the turn signals. I assume that the wheel has gotten hard over the years and is not turning consistantly.

Anyone have any experience with this and maybe a place to get a replacement or some kind of work-around? I am constantly forgetting to manually turn off the signal and its 3 blocks later before I remember.

    Help !

I took mine apart and cleaned it - it helped for a while - the main problem with mine is it does not often have enough power to make the relay blink - I have to flip it off and on manually to get a blinking turn signal. I replaced the circuit breaker and it helped a little. Some days it blinks fine, some days not. I think you have to replace the whole switch and arm assembly as a unit for the non-cancelling. Jeepdoc.com has one for $39.95 -complete switch to clamp to column. Could not tell from picture if it is original equipment or not (part #947348).

wohh, wait a second, there was a self cancelling unit? This is all I've seen on the 75 CJs and you have to turn them off yourself. I thought it was aftermarket as I have two hazards now, but I've seen several of these on these years of CJs.

The one pictured is an aftermarket Signal Stat 900 series. Still manufactured today. High quality switch, they are sometimes original equipment in big trucks. (Freightliner, Peterbilt, etc.) The stock switch was a Sparton and has a rubber wheel that rides against the column to self-cancel.

In this months issue of Street Rodder magazine the are selling a flasher unit replacement with a buzzer. After X amount of seconds a buzzer goes off "helping" you to remember to turn off your indicator. Also google "turn signal flasher with buzzer" there are a few DIY projects. I will post the info from Street Rodder if I remember.

How about using some of the rubberized stuff in a can that you put on tool handles? Put it on the hub. It might work,,, but if it doesn't it might be tough to clean off.....

When I re-wired a while back I took the Spartan switch apart to clean. The rubber wheel can be adjusted if it needs it.

Mine hasn't worked since I got the Jeep either. I took it apart and the wheel seems to turn but it doesn't look like it's hooked up to anything. Does anyone have a pic of the inside guts of a Spartan so I can see if I can fab something that will work?

Can't try just moving the entire assembly up further where it'll catch the steering wheel flange at a thicker spot?

I have tried adjusting it further up the column so that the wheel is tighter against the steering wheel. It works better when it is hot outside. I think it is a traction situation. The rubber wheel thingy is just old and dried out and works ok when its warm out but does not work so good when its not. The idea of the plastic dip stuff might work for awhile, but I think it would wear off before too long.

I also thought about roughing up the part of the steering wheel that the rubber wheel rides on. Ideally, I woud like to find a shiney new replacement rubber wheel but it sounds like that might not be an option.

I like the alternative of a buzzer built into the signal relay. That will at least keep me from looking like a dork 4 blocks down the road from my last turn.

If you guys have any more ideas, I'm all ears. I'm kinda surprised that this topic has not been discussed in detail previously. (maybe it has) Seems like this should be a common issue with this friction canceling system.

    Thanks,

Larry...........If you can find the info on where to get the signal relay with built in buzzer i'd sure appreciate it. I have googled and googled and all I'm finding is DYI stuff and spending time under the Jeeps dash is low on my list of priorities ! A "plug & play" product would be perfect.

    Thanks,

strangely enough, i disabled the self-cancelling feature on my '75. my wheel has enough play that the signal would usually be cancelled before i made the turn, so i just lowered the signal assembly away from the steering wheel hub. it worked great, when it was being used. whoda thunk it?

I think over the years I've just gotten in the habit of sticking a finger out while the wheel returns to center after turning to catch the turn signal and turn it off - to the point of not even thinking about it anymore.

Kinda like shifting into 2nd then back to 1st with the T90 at a light...

Take the wheel out and (carefully) scuff it up with some sand paper. Just make sure you don't make any flat spots on it.

    Jeffzilla,
I lied it was in the October issue of Street rodder, I forgot I was in the upstairs “library” not the downstairs “reading parlor”. Here is what it says: Manufactured by DAECO, go to www.turnalarm.com. I know I would spend $25 to not have to hang upside down in the drivers seat for an afternoon.

I replaced mine a long time ago, the wheel was cracked and such so went searching and at the time you could only buy the whole unit not just the wheel. I personally dont like it, as sometimes it works, most of the time it doesnt. Over time seems like the body of the turn switch gets pushed away from the column and the rubber wheel loses its grip. I just get used to turning it off. Wish I could find something different.
