Fuel Gauge/sending Unit

    I have a '57 CJ5. I'm fooling around with the fuel sending unit/gauge. I know it should read between 10 ohms (full) and 73 ohms (empty). Do I do this ohm check on the sending unit or the gauge? Where exactly do I check this at? Also, If I need to adjust my gauge (on the instrument cluster) how do I do that. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I only have one wire from from the sending unit to the gauge. Thanks. -G

    Pull the sender out of the tank and put an ohm meter on it from the screw contact to the ground (housing). It should read ~10 ohms when the arm is all the way up and ~ 70 ohms when the arm is down. You can check the gauge by putting a 10-ohm resistor between the gauge and ground (full reading) and either a 68- or 75- ohm resistor in the line (empty reading.)

    If either of these fail to produce the results desired, either the wire. the gauge or the voltage-drop resistor feeding the gauge may be bad.

    I checked for resistance, I'm not getting anything at all. I used a different meter, made sure I had a good ground, moved the arm up and down, I get nothing. Guess I should order a new sending unit. The cluster is new. One more question; to adjust the ohms how do I do that? Is it on the cluster itself? -G

    does anyone know how to adjust the fuel gauge (if it even can be)

    Don't know if you have a stock gauge, but if you do then you have no gauge adjust. It is designed to match the sender resistances. There are some aftermarket gauges that are adjustable and you can see the screwdriver slot for that purpose..
