Well, the two kind of go together. Anyway, I've decided to swap in a new column for sure and maybe go to hanging pedals (for power brakes). I'd love to see pictures of your work to draw ideas from. Please post either/or.:v6:

I use the entire set-up out of a late 80s cherokee. You can put a plate on the firewall to stiffen it up and bolt up the pedals-with brake light switch, power booster and master cylinder. If using front disks and rear drums then you can even run the proportion valve. About $75-100 at most u-pull-it wrecking yards. If you need to change the master cylinder, every flaps stocks it for $30. The best part is that Jeep did all the engineering. I run a bracket from the top two holes on the pedal assembly to the column mount and a tab to the dash. If you can find one in good shape, the same column out of the cherokee is also a easy swap as it uses all the gm type plugs on it.

If you use Cherokee parts there is no fabrication and they are plentiful enough to see one in person without pics.

I'm thinking about using a Ford column out of a highboy since they are similar to the original and have no tilt and are all steel all the way up to the wheel. Now I need to decide what pedals to use?

My assembly also looks a bit similar to bkd's except the clutch cylinder is mounted directly to the bracket facing toward the rear, similar to the way the brake master is mounted on the FC's, and it uses a Wilwood remote master for the clutch. My column is a Flaming River unit which I mounted with my own drop and bottom bracket (may be jpg in 3B album). Sorry, but no pics of the peddle assembly and it is much to buried to get one now. An FC bracket assembly could be good fodder for parts, the the peddles would need shortened.

This is the route that I took for my tilt column conversion.
I decided to leave the pedals where they were, I raised the heater assembly up a couple inches, and fabbed up a column bracket. I had to modify the dash accordingly, but I ordered a column cover for that of a 76-86 CJ. I sill need to fab up a firewall mount, I have one mocked up for clearance and mounting issues in the meantime. The work is still in progress, but I can turn my wheels with the Jeep on the ground with out the steering pump mounted yet.

I will be posting my power steering conversion onto the PS conv. thread when the operation is complete. But for now, here is what I have.

mtndewmaniac66 how many wiering mods will you have to do to make the ignition in the cherokee column work?

I have a 86 AMC cherokee that i will be using the column, lower column, steering gear, brake master+booster, and the fire wall pedals and brackets.

My conversion was a success. I used a column and a steering box from a 1983 AMC Eagle. They are of GM manufacture, and are quite easy to adapt. After many online searches, they turn out to be the same parts as the 80's Cherokees.

Turn signals and brake feed, 4-way flashers, headlight dimmer, ignition, accessorys and horn. I purchased a GM Column Conversion kit from Summit Racing PN 30806. http://www.summitracing.com/search/?keyword=30806&dds=1

It comes with instruction sheets, all the connectors and terminals necessary to successfully convert a GM column into any vehicle. I would recommend using the FSM, Haynes or Chiltons for the wire color conversions, and take notes, many notes. You can also log onto Painless Wiring for instructions as well.
