T90 Tranny problems? (and a few other)

Hello all! I recently became the proud new owner of a 1970 CJ5. It has the dauntless V6, 231, and I was told a T90 transmission. I'll apologize in advance for my terrible shop talk, I can do the work, but as far as knowing what parts are called, I'm horrid.

1: I got it running and discovered (by backing over my a/c unit) that the only working gear is apparently reverse. I opened up the case, and the rear shift ring (?) is sliding forward and back smoothly, but the front ring doesn't seem to move... The only neutral I have while the engine is running is if I put the transfer case into neutral. If the transfer case is in gear, then it's moving backwards as soon as the clutch comes out. Reverse and 1st move it backwards, while 2nd and 3rd appear to be completely locked. If I put it into 2nd or 3rd and let the clutch out, it completely bogs the engine out. Not like the creeping forward when you try to start out in third rather than first, just dead stop. Anyone have any ideas?

2: I was told the P-PO geared it to 4.88, anyone know if I'll be able to get this thing over 40? Or should I change that?

3: My Master Cylinder is shot, as are the brake lines, so I'll be replacing that. Any upgrades you all would recommend while I'm at it?

Thanks for the help! I'll get pictures up soon. Right now the tub is hanging about 5 feet off my garage floor with the frame pulled halfway out from under it....

    I'll start here.;)
Yes. I have 4.88's (with 33" tires) and it'll run 60 very comfortably, and It'll actually do probably 75.

Sweet. Glad to hear that. I'm not the most knowledgeable car guy... I am fairly decent at seeing how something is supposed to work and why it's not. But I'm not all that great at figuring gear ratios to speed. I have either 31 or 33s, can't remember which right now... The jeep is in my garage and there is an awesome pool of tranny fluid out there now. Thanks for the info on the gearing patrick!

Look at the side of the tranny. You probably have a T-14. Still a 3 speed. Should be a 225 unless its been changed out.

    Yep, if stock, it should be a T14. Also, if it's original, and it's Dauntless, it's a 225, not a 231.

On the trans, do not do the stress test another time with it in second or third. Something is jammed and something will eventually break. Check it all again by pulling the top. I had a T84 that had the two sliders crossed up because of a shifter and it basically put the trans in second and reverse at same time. Can you look closer at why you cant move the 1-R rail? is there so much stress built up due to you slightly letting out the clutch that you have to back some of the stress off a gear set to slide the rail?

Try to look in there and see if you can get any movement manually. With luck this is something simple.

Check the side of your trans. Did someone put a T90 in place of a T14? This site may help ID what you have: http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/transmission_gateway.htm

Thanks for the help, I'll try it out as soon as I get more shop time, as well as determine what type of tranny it is. As for the engine size, I figured it would be a 225 as well, but the casting numbers on the back of the block don't match up with the numbers he has listed here for a 225, they seem to match up with the later 231s. So I'm assuming one of the POs swapped the engine.

So I checked it out, the tranny is a T90, it's stamped on the side. Checked out the exploded views on Novak, and it looks like the PO did a poor job of rebuilding it. Looks like the 2nd/3rd slide is backwards? In addition to it completely missing the bearing retainer. So it looks like a tranny rebuild is in the works... Should be a fun experience...

    No problem rebuilding a T90.
Look here for some guidance and tricks:

Parts are plentyful used but put real dollars into all new bearings and check out the shaft diameters with a mic. When you finish it all up you will think you are a rocket surgeon.

Thanks for all the help with the tranny! Turns out the PO rebuilt it, and put the clutch sleeve (the slide for 2nd/3rd) in backwards. I can see why he would, if he didn't know what he was doing, because it was a bear to get in properly... But I got it all put back together properly and it seems to work great! I swear I will get some pictures put up soon! The tub is still hanging from the rafters in my garage, so it's sort of hard to get a good picture that way...
But thanks again for the help with the tranny!
