I have found a old Warn Belleview winch for sale locally, and may get it. It is attached to a rolling ECJ5 frame. Well, the winch looks like a M8274. It is a pretty big winch. I did some research and found that they have called Warn 8074, or a Warn 5687.. and that these are the type that had cable operated controls, but however could be converted to be like a m8274.

Has anyone had any experience with these type of winch ?

If I get it.. it probably will need to be gone though pretty well.

Also though my research, these winches were a dealership option on AMC Jeeps.

The winch is the Daddy to the 8274. The main issue with it is is only has power in, and it has a lever brake on it. So if you winch in and want to stop, you better put the brake on or the winch will just release the cable out when you stop. I had the bellview and didnt realize that until i was winching out some bushes.

sold as over the counter accessory item.
many, if not all, were dealer installed.
    don't recall factory install
    maybe timgr can confirm that

I searched, and couldn't find your thread.

I've read that you can upgrade these winches to have power out/in.. so that sounds good to me.

i run one on my willys.

I tore it apart and cleaned the whole thing and the gears were all in good shape, but I'd check that. It is pretty easy to clean up.

I had the original motor rebuilt for about 120$. It is like new now, but still only powers in.

I converted the motor to solenoid operation, so it will power in controlled by a dash mounted switch.

There is a thread on pirate4x4, by logjam-grant i believe, where a ramsey winch motor is used to provide power in/out options. I don't think the model number is ever given though.

Would also be interested in power out option for 5721. I solved the brake problem on mine using a kawasaki caliper and a snowmobile disc, with the remote master mounted below the floor between the seats. Not a good feeling dangling off the cable and not being able to stop the feedout without appyling the power. This set up cured that. jpg in my 3B album.

I have one on mine and its really retro looking and works well too. I'm not sure how youd retrofit it to power in and power out because I think the brake is the tricky part, not the motor.

The thing I really like about it is it has a really fast line speed. I know its way faster than the REP8000 on my XJ, probably faster than any other modern winch, except the 8274.

    Enjoy it!:)

    Good info.

duffer: I really want a bigger picture of you winch. I like the disc caliper brake idea.

Will try to get some close-up's in am and add to album. It has been converted for at least 25 years and has worked great. I also still have a Beleview 6000 on my CJ5 that I bought used in 1969-never have had to do any work on it either. Tough tools.

Dan: Added 3 jpgs to 3B album showing winch brake. Probably should check pbucket agreement so I could just post photos but just do not like it.

Very nice.. the pictures still are quite small. Theres tinypics.com and imageshack.us that work pretty good, and require no signing up. Just upload and they give you the address to the pic.

Is the caliper hydraulic powered ? If it is.. what do you use to engage the brakes ?

I have two emergency brake levers from 70's? Toyodas mounted between the seats. The left one is mechanically hooked up to the D18 brake while the right one operates a Fiat master cylinder with line to winch caliper. The master is mounted off a bracket on the center cross member. The remote reservoir for the master is mounted on the right side of the firewall. The Wilwood master cylinders were not around when I put this together but would be a better choice today. If you do this conversion, make sure there is no residual valve in the system or pulling out the cable will be very difficult.
