First let me introduce myself.... I have a lot of experience restoring 60's muscle cars and have owned and restored/modified several FJ-40 Landcruisers. So I have the skills to save this !

My main question is how are the I.D. plates made? Are they steel or brass? Are the graphics on them painted or engraved? I can barely see that the numbers that I'm looking for are stamped but trying to clean it I don't want to destroy the rest of it by mistake. The center plate is the one with the serial number MB/GPW on it? Any suggestions for how to clean them are certainly welcome!

I'll post better pictures of the entire Jeep in the next few days.

Any idea what year it is? It has a later model rear axle, probably a Dana 44 instead of the full-float 23. The data plates are either aluminum or brass in my experience, I would try chemical paint stripper and a SOFT brush. You can buy reproductions, but it would be nice to get all the numbers off of yours. You may want to drill the rivets out and do the data plates separately. Chemical stripper behind the plates will be difficult to completely remove. Hopefully they are the brass plates which are more durable it seems.

So far from what I can tell I think it's a 43-45 by the way the gas tank sump? box looks. It has two drains on it and I think that makes it a 43-45 from what I can find looking at the parts websites.

aallison 74 cj6, 76 cj5. Has anyone seen my screwdriver?

Way cool! And trying to save it, most awsome.

What about electrolysis? Will the two different metals cause problems? I would think that would work with the correct sacrifical metal.

Jasco paint stripper worked pretty good. I guess the body/tub is a Ford. Born on 2-10-43

The finished product after a whole day or paint stripper and naval jelly. Obviously this will have to be copied onto a new plate to make it presentable. Then again using this one would certainly show how far the Jeep came from the way it was found.

Bubba has been hard at work on this one! The first thing that is going to be deleted are those retarded fender flares. Then the mickey mouse roll bar. Unfortunately the steering column has to stay for a while just so I can move it around.
I need to get some better pictures of the engine, frame and the transmission/transfer so you guys can help me figure out what I really have but it's been raining since we got it home. Maybe tomorrow?

Be interesting to see what's under that skid plate. Based on the goofy steering column, my guess is a redneck Saginaw box conversion.

You got it. You wouldn't beleive how they mounted it. I think they just propped it up and started welding the steering box to the frame with whatever leftover cut-offs they had from the rest of their first class mods........

    It's truly Bubba worthy!

Good to see you made it over to the site. You have a lot of work ahead of you. You came to the right forum for useful helpful direction. What are your basic buildup goals and outline? Good luck with the project.

Thank you for pointing me in this direction :)

As far as the goal. Good question. I just came off the Camaro build and I just finished a single seater Hayabusa powered desert rail for my daughter so my credit cards need a break. I can't decide if I should go with a stock flavor build or just go hog wild and stuff the LS type motor in it. It's probably going to depend on whether I can get the drivetrain in there to work or not with minimal effort. Either way in the long run (years) my hotrodder soul isn't going to be able to live with the < 100hp it'll have.

just saw all the pic's on the g. that thing is fricken awsome. if you can remember it's not a show car u will have a blast fixing her up.

my salad is a mb,cj2a,m38 combo and my tub was hacked in half and the rear portion re-cunstructed out of 1/8 matieral.

electrolysis is your friend and cheaper than new parts. i was surprised at how good some of the metal was under the rust.

read before you take it apart. what got me was the shackles and wheel studs on the pass side have left-handed threads.

edit: and just seeing what it's suppose to look like
