T90 help!!

I have a T90 that wont stay in 2nd gear and grinds going in to 2nd and 3rd. What can I do or does anybody know a good rebuild guy near Holland, MI

Popping out of 2nd is common and ususlly indicates a worn 2nd gear internal bushing as described in the article linked above. Gear clash downshifting from 3rd to 2nd is expected in a worn transmission - the 2nd gear blocking ring is worn. Learn to double clutch.

Actually, the T90 is a pretty straight forward rebuild that doesn't require a bunch of special tools, although a dummy shaft helps with the assembly of the countershaft needle bearings. If so inclined, this would be a good project to get your "feet wet". Get a factory manual-it can be 2A, 3A, 3B, CJ5/6, or for FC 150/70, wagons or pickups. All utilized T90's and will have adequate instructions.

 

yup these are about as simple as it gets. Its probrobly a tougher job to get tranny out and back in then to actually rebuild it. 4wd.com is where i get parts for that kinda thing

Take your time and rebuild it yourself over the winter

It may be a religious experience in itself.

 

I'm a little shy of generic parts from the Jeep retailers.

I'd go with a kit from Herm or from Novak. Herm puts together his kits from various sources, and has a realistic idea of the relative quality of specific parts from different suppliers. Herm's prices are good too.

Kicking out likely because teeth on the gears are chipped off (how mine was)

piece of cake to rebuild, buy the Herm kit and I didn't even have a manual! Knock the bottom shaft out, counter gear set rests in case, the top set slides right out. I made a dozen mistakes by not carefully noting the order the syncros came out.

Worse part of the project is getting it out of the Jeep and back in! Buy one from somebody and rebuild it.

Very rewarding project
