Exhaust re-route, suggestions

    A little back ground. I have dual exhaust that exists right under the passenger and driver seats. The pipes come out of the manifold, under the frame and then to the mufflers. Last summer after many years of abuse I decided to have a new exhaust system installed. I wanted it to run to the back of the rear tires. After many quotes ($500-$700) and many trips to muffler shops I just had new mufflers put on in the same location. Bad idea, my first trip with the new mufflers and the P-side got crunched. On the Rubicon work weekend this year I came down on a pipe and had an exhaust leak at the flange the whole weekend and finally on my last trip I crunched the D-side.
    Now my plan. I have a Buick 231 V6 with stock exhaust manifolds. I cannot run the P-side next to the transmission due to clearance issues. I am going to route this side towards the front around the oil pan and then back. I will then bring the D-side and P-side together and run them above the skid plate to a single muffler. From there down the d-side along the frame and exiting through the quarter panel behind the tire.
    Looking for suggestions and possible issues. For some reason my P-side exhaust manifold has 2 dumps on it, one on the center and one to the rear. I am going to use the center one.

    a couple glass packs back to back will be just as quite as a regular muffler with out the crunching effect.

    I mainly do rock crawling and the other issue is coming down on the actual pipes. Both flanges have pretty serious leaks now. I tried new o-rings but the pipes are bent and they will not line up straight.

    rock -n- roll Jeff....my muffler guy has gotten good at cutting out the crushed sections and patching it up for me R).....been 3 or 4 times now

    IIRC, this 2 outlet manifold was actually the cross over pipe, driver's side dumped into the pass side exhaust manifold and then out down the pass side. This is the way an 84 Buick Regal was plumbed.

    As for glass packs, I would stay away from them, they are straight through style muffler and illegal on Forest Service property.

    If you have to run the pipe around, Y the two (2" tube?) together and run a single larger tube (2 1/2" or 3") out the back. This may not be as cool but I'm guessing one pipe is easier to fish thru than two. With one pipe running down the driver's side keeping it high, the muffler could fit that space between the Xfer and rear axle (sideways), allowing the exhaust to come in the drivers side and out the pass side, then out the back how ever you see fit.

    Is it OK to use the center "cross over" as an outlet instead of the rear dump?

    Exactly what I was planning on doing, 2 into one muffler and 1 talipipe.

    Have you thought of using a turbo set up? the manifolds would cross over with a pipe on the front of the engine. (behind fan, protected) then there would only be one exhaust pipe which if you had that much problems you might be able to hide in frame rail. edit the GMC Typhoon used this setup, worked good for them.

    Sounds like a good idea but I am a bit cheap and do not want to spend money on a new manifold. Hopefully I can use what I have and keep it enough out of the way.

    Almost sounds as if going back something like the stock ('71 w/ 225) would work for you...

    Not sure what that looks like. I picked up some straight pipe today and I am heading to the garage now. Hope to have more pics soon.

    Great pic. I am doing something similar but running around the front of the oil pan to keep it as high as possible. Some very good ideas here!

    I removed everything and hope to get it welded (tacked) early next week. I'll try to get a picture of everything off the Jeep.

    I like the way you ran that but worried I would bash it on rocks. Since I do mostly rock crawling I routinely bounce off my trans skid plate.

    I've done a lot of skidding across my skid plate, I'm amazed I haven't hit is yet. Just couldn't find another rout to cross over the exhaust. :rofl:

    I have a rear gas tank and want to exit the frame right before the body mount behind the axle. Any better pictures of how you ran it to the rear?
