    Hey guys,

I have a 1973 CJ-5 with aftermarket Sunpro oil pressure and voltmeter gauges in the dash. I'm trying to keep everything as close to OEM as possible so I want to replace the Sunpros with closer to OEM gauges. What options do I have for stock, or close to stock, for my year CJ? Most of the options I found were for later year CJs.

Here are photos of the backs of my current gauges. Is this just a 10 minute replace the gauge head job or will it be more involved?

    Thanks and Happy Labor Day,
    Jason

Ive had good success with NOS guages on Ebay. Keep and eye out and you can find some at resonalble prices. I think I paid $10 bucks for mid 50's King Sealey guages.

And the replacement will depend on how the PO hacked up the wireing. From the pict, it's not stock but it's not bad either. You might get an easy job out of it. And you might need a new oil pressure sender as well..........

Well, replacing the factory gauges is a common upgrade. The factory would have supplied an ammeter and an electric oil pressure gauge. You now have a voltmeter and a mechanical oil pressure gauge, both of which I would consider an upgrade to the factory equipment. The Sunpro gauges could be cheapies or could be quality ... the original gauges were made by Stewart-Warner, but were not externally labeled as such.

I bought this oil pressure gauge for my CJ-6 http://www.summitracing.com/parts/ATM-2421/ because it's full-sweep and has a red needle, like the original Jeep gauges. I still have the original voltmeter, but its face is faded and I will likely replace it at some point.

If you switch back to the factory type of gauges, then it will be more than a 10 minute job. Unless it uses an external shunt, an ammeter needs the full charging current through it (big wire), so I'd expect some significant rewiring. You could mount a shunt under the hood and send the ammeter sense wires to it, but that's not how the factory did it. An electric oil pressure sensor will also require some rewiring, and an oil pressure sending unit under the hood.

If it were mine, I'd be happy for the upgrade to voltmeter and mechanical OP, and replace the Sunpro gauges with more factory appearing gauges. That's a 10 minute job. The Autometer OP gauges come with installation kits (plastic tubing); I always go out of my way to protect that tubing. I run the entire length inside of rubber vacuum hose to protect it. I also route the tubing away from anything hot, like the exhaust manifolds. You can get an installation kit with copper tubing, if you prefer. IMO copper isn't that great because it will eventually work-harden and crack. Steel would be better, but I've had good luck with plastic as long as it's well protected.
