I am preparing for a labor day weekend jeep ride, and decided to install the pertronix (1165) and flamethrower that has been on the shelf since November. I really was not having any problems with points, but I thought I may get a little quicker start, and added reliability.

I followed directions, noted rotor position, pulled distributor (I needed the shim to limit endplay on the dist. shaft) and reinstalled. My initial timing by ear was too advanced (>15 deg.) and resulted in exhaust backfiring and very hadr start / kickback on the starter. I set the timing to 10, and now 5 degrees using a light, while warm, and vac. disconnected, and these symptoms have much improved, but have not completely dissappeared. About one start in five results in a kickback, or hard start, as if timing is too advanced. The timing is advancing with throttle, I have good power under accelleration, but some stumbling at cruising RPM.

Any suggestions? Do I need to re-gap with the hotter coil?

    Thanks

You can run an 035 gap, 050 is OK too. Neither gap should impact what you are experiencing. right around 5*BTDC should be just about right for smooth running.

IIRC, Pertronix made some magnet rings incorrectly. Try turning the magnet ring upside down and reinstalling. A number of guys here have run into this and found that to be the fix.

Don't turn it upside down like Lynn said, spin 180*. Maybe check your mechanical advance, my spring stud came out and prevented the weight from returning all the way, so it was FAR to advanced.

That's what Lynn meant. You can't turn it upside down.;)

I'll try it... I guess this would be similar to having the distributor 180 out. Firing on exhaust on some cylinders.... too much geometry for 5:00. I'll skip the engineering and go with science. I'll experiment when I get home. Reverse it and re-time.

Thanks again gentlemen! I'll let you know.

Thanks to all who replied and EarlyCJ5.com! That was the problem Lynn! After reversing the magnetic ring, the engine fired, but timing was way advanced. I set the timing, and now pertronix is an improvement over points! I would not have figured this out without you guys. I have sent pertronix an email letting them know my dissatisfaction with their lack of getting the info out there if they knew of the problem and fixed it.

The bad ones have been around for years. I'm surprised they're still cropping up. My Dad had the same issue, and his was ordered from the same place at the same time as mine was, and mine was fine.

I bought from Quadratec in Nov. 08. Hopefully Pertronix gets it right, and makes it right by getting the info out. I wonder if this can even be a problem on any even fire? It may be oddfire unique. And I am thinking that if the rotor did not have the elongated contact, it would not run or at least run worse unless corrected.
