Was driving my latest project and noticed when in 4wd hi or low - there is a rumbling sound coming from up front when you let off the gas. I was test driving it on concrete. I unlocked the hubs and the noise went away. What do you think? Front knuckes?

    Thanks in advance.

Probably worn splines in the slipjoint of the front drive shaft. Grab the driveshaft and see if you can get it to wiggle at the slipjoint. Check that first as it's the easiest. If that's OK, see if you have any play in the pinion coming out of the differential. It's probably the driveshaft though.

Checked the driveshaft - there is some wobble - not a lot but I assume it shouldn't wobble at all. I'll get it fixed to see if that solves it. Thanks for the advice!

If it was a wheel bearing it should make noise in either 2 or 4wd.

Dan: Mine does the same thing. Got about 1/8" play in the slip joint. Got a rebuilt shaft from a member here, but havent installed it yet. Since you don't drive at high speed with the T/C case engaged, you can live with a little "slop". You might try greasing the slip joint--it helps for a while.

One of these days (???? ) I'll put the new shaft in--it's just so HARD! R)
